Design and Setup
The Camerons grill is designed for easy assembly and setup. The kit comes in an easy carry bag that contains four pieces, two solid steel poles, an adjustable post positioner and the grill grate itself. The two steel pole pieces screw together making a long 31 1/2″ steel post, that supports the grill. This long post is then driven into the ground. I recommend finding solid ground to insert the post, as well as using a hammer to pound it as deep as the fire pit accommodations will allow. The deeper that the post is into the ground the more stable it will be. Then attach the post positioner to the grate, tighten the screw, and place the wire support over the top of the positioner. Finally sliding the grate onto the post and tighten the screw once the desired position is achieved. A few simple and easy steps, and the Camerons grill is ready to deliver wood-fired meals.
Testing
I tested the open fire pit grill over the weekend while camping at a state park. The fire pit that was designated at our campsite was a concrete column about 30″ high and 30″ in diameter. Setting up the grill was simple and straight forward. I drove the post into the inside of the concrete fire pit, attached the grill and adjusted the height. Through out the weekend we cooked every meal on the grill, from breakfast to dinner and even brewed coffee on it. We were cooking food for ten people and never seemed short of room on the grill grate. The food never stuck to the grating, although to ensure that it did not, we did a preemptive spray with cooking oil, however I do not think that it would have been necessary thanks to the stainless steel grating.
- Perfect for Brewing Coffee
- Breakfast
- Hotdogs and Brats
One of the nice things about the grill is that it easily swings out of the way when you want to enjoy the fire or need to roast marshmallows for smores.

Swings Out of the Way
For breakfast on the last day, I decided to test the 12 lbs capacity rating, with a dutch oven filled with breakfast sausages (probably close to 25 lbs). Had I driven the steel post farther into the ground I don’t think that it would have been a problem, but the post ended up tilting and we had to put a piece of wood on the opposite side of the post to help support it. If I would have had a solid foundation for the steel support post I believe it would have held the dutch oven without a problem.
After letting the grill and post cool down, disassembly was a breeze. Loosen the adjustment screws, pull off the grill grate from the post, pull up the post, unscrew it and pack everything into the carrying case.
Clean up after camping is simple, toss the grill grate into the dishwasher and pack it away when it is done drying.
