Leatherman Rev
“We improve people’s lives by creating products which prepare them for the expected and unexpected.” This is the mission statement from Leatherman who has been producing multi-tools since 1983. A multi-tool is a product that combines multiple gadgets and tools into a single product. When venturing into the outdoors there are just too many situations where a multi-tool is handy or even becomes a necessity. Over the past few months, I have had the chance to carry the Leatherman Rev with me on my fishing trips, hikes, and road trips and have been impressed by its functionality
Features of the Leather Rev
Leatherman has a large line up of multi-tools that range from 4 to 21 different tools and gadgets. The Leatherman Rev falls in the middle of the pack containing 13 different tools. The Rev features needle nose pliers, regular pliers, hard-wire cutters, wire cutters, a 2.6” stainless steel knife, package opener, 1.5-inch ruler, can opener, bottle opener, metal/wood file, Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, and small screwdriver.
The Leatherman Rev is also in the middle as far as its’ size. When closed it is 3.8 inches long and weighs 5.8 ounces. For reference, the largest Leatherman multi-tool is 12.9 ounces and the smallest is 1.8 ounces.
Other features of the Leatherman Rev include a blade lock, replaceable pocket clip, and outside accessible knife.
Performance Review of Leatherman Rev
The Leatherman Rev has been a fun product to review. It is crazy just to see how many different situations the Rev comes in handy. Leatherman did a great job in choosing the tools incorporated in the Rev multi-tool. These are the tools that I would want to use the most. I have had multi-tools before where there were certain features that I hardly used. This is definitely not the case with the Leatherman Rev. Throughout the past couple of months each of the 13 tools have played a part in my outdoor adventures.
So far I have used this tool for filleting fish, pulling screws out of dry wall, repairing a leaky sprinkler system, pulling flies and lures out of toothy fish, fixing a broken boat motor, sharpening dull fishing hooks, rewiring a boat trailer, splitting wood, creating a clothesline on a camping trip, pulling nails out of a wall, cutting steel fishing leaders and heavy monofilament fishing line, and maybe most importantly opening malt beverages after successful fishing trips.

Filleting Fish With Leatherman Rev
Although many of the uses above may be more of a matter of convenience some of these saved the entire outing from disaster. At one point I had driven 8 hours on a fishing trip to only find out that our trolling motor was not working. After opening the motor up with the Rev, we found out that the wires had been corroded by saltwater. Using the wire cutters, all three screwdrivers, the knife, and package opener we were back in business.

What makes the Rev so functional, aside from the tools, is a small size. At 5.9 ounces it is very easy to bring it along in your pockets. The real bulky multi-tools might require a good strong belt in order to carry them on a long hike. I usually find that when equipment becomes cumbersome to travel with me I have a tendency to leave it behind.
