Very Berryz, Health Nutz, and Mean Greenz all sound like the name of the latest and greatest nutrition bar or smoothie drink out on the market. Not so fast, they are the three flavors of Zuke’s new Superfood Organic Dog Biscuits. Zuke’s, based in Colorado, is known for creating wholesome-organic treats such as Hip Action and Power Bones to help fuel your dog out on the trail. Zuke’s has created a new formula that incorporates ingredients rich in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants to provide a nutritious and delicious snack for your four legged best friend.
So, why are antioxidants and omega 3’s important for my dog? Free radicals are produced in our body, and our dogs body, each time the body’s cells use oxygen. It is well known that free radicals can cause damage to the body’s tissues. Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods that can prevent or slow damage caused by free radicals. Omega 3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids that are necessary for health but cannot be produced by the body (human and canine). Therefore, we (dogs too) must get omega 3’s through our food. Omega 3’s play a role in brain function, growth & development, prevent inflammation, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Okay, sorry for the lecture about nutrition, but I have am also a nurse and love to impart some health knowledge to people, including dog owners. If antioxidant and omega 3 containing food is so important for human health, why not provide your dog with the same benefits? Foods that contain these nutrients are commonly called super-foods, hence the name of Zuke’s new treats.
The three flavors of Zuke’s Superfood Organic Dog Biscuits are wheat, corn, and soy free which means they are great for dogs with allergies to these ingredients. Zuke’s uses organic ground oats, barley, potatoes, and sunflower-canola-or olive oil as its’ ingredient base and adds in antioxidant rich ingredients such as blueberries, cranberries, raspberries for the Very Berryz flavor and green beans, spinach, and broccoli for the Mean Greenz flavor. While Health Nutz, incorporates peanuts and almonds to provide your pup with omega 3’s and protein.
Our dog testers, Aspen and Suki, have been really big fans of the Very Berryz flavor. We have used them as a treat for along the trail to entice them into staying a bit closer to us and not wandering off. Aspen and Suki have liked them so much that when I clipped their coats last week, they stayed put because I kept bribing them with a treat for good behavior. Staying still is not usually the case when it comes to grooming, so they must really like these biscuits. I like them because they are small enough to use as a treat to award good behavior and because I know they are good for the dogs. Here is a quick break down of the nutritional value for one Very Berryz treat:
- Protein not less than 10%
- Fat not less than 11%
- Fiber not more than 5.5%
- Moisture not more than 10%
- Calories Approximately 9 per piece
The Zuke’s Superfood Organic Dog Biscuits are fairly priced as far as organic treats go with a MSRP 7.69 per 14 oz box. The 14 oz box has been in our house for over 3 weeks and we still have some treats left to give for a good sit, shake, or stay! Overall, Aspen and Suki have enjoyed their super-food experience, whether they know how good the food is for them or not. While I enjoyed knowing that I was giving my dogs a healthy snack!
