Therm-a-Rest Oberon 0F/-18C Review

For over 45 years, Therm-a-Rest has been committed to creating a better way to camp – from technical camping mattresses to sleeping bags, cots, hammocks, tents and more. The Seattle-based business is offering a new line of Fast & Light sleeping bags in 2018. Built with premium materials and Responsible Down Standard fill, the new bags will allow explorers to rest better while pushing deeper into the backcountry.

For mountaineers and winter explorers expecting frigid temperatures, Therm-a-Rest designed the new Oberon™ 0F/-18C with 800-fill Nikwax hydrophobic down bag to keep you warm and secure at camp. The design team drew on their experiences sleeping outside to maximize the efficiency of the bag with features like Zoned Insulation, ThermaCapture lining and SynergyLink™ connectors.

Product Details

For those that take their adventures into the heart of winter or into colder climates, the Oberon provides the crucial protection you need. The Oberon is built to protect athletes from extreme conditions during extreme pursuits, meticulously designing every gram to add warmth and security for the user. Certified by the Responsible Down Standard, the bag’s 800-fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down repels moisture and stays warm in damp conditions.
800-fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™: Dries three times faster than untreated down without using dangerous PFCs.

SynergyLink™ Connectors: Integrate the bag with a mattress for optimal comfort and efficiency; removable for versatility.

ThermaCapture™ Lining: Top of bag is lined to trap radiant body heat and retain warmth without adding bulk or weight.

Zoned Insulation: Maximizes warmth and saves weight by intentionally placing fill where you need it most. Using 60% of the fill on top and 40% on the bottom gives the Oberon the optimum balance of warmth-to-weight.

Toe-asis Foot Warmer Pocket: Ergonomic toe box that rapidly warms cold feet in a pocket of warm down.

Quilt and Blanket Loops: Customize your sleep system by layering our quilts or tech blankets for increased warmth.

Responsible Down Standard Certified: Certification that ensures that the waterfowl in the down supply chain are treated humanely.

Additional features: Heat-trapping draft collars, full-length zipper draft tubes, differential cut, snag-free zipper, cinch-able hood and external zip pocket.

The Verdict

The Therma-A-Rest Oberon Sleeping Bag brings you fiery warmth and a cozy night’s sleep in frigid back country environments where temperatures flirt with the negatives. Stuffed with 800 Fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down insulation, the Oberon provides a toasty cocoon in temps as low as zero, and even retains its’ warmth under wetter conditions thanks to its ability to repel moisture. The ergonomic mummy shape makes for a spacious yet incredibly pack-able design with the help of the included compression sack. The zoned insulation maximizes warmth and saves weight by intentionally placing fill where you need it most, offering up one of the best fill-to-warmth ratios I have ever tested. A draft collar further prevents heat loss while sealing out blustery winds, and the Toe-asis Foot Warmer Pocket keeps the feet toasty without making them feel like they are in a straight jacket. The Oberon is the Perfect companion for those that need a high quality, lightweight and pack-able bag for frozen winter pursuits.
