Benchmade Crooked River Review

If there’s one tool that follows me from the high country to the riverbank and everywhere in between, it’s the Benchmade Crooked River. As a hunter, fisherman, camper, backpacker, and someone who works with my hands every day, I rely on a knife that can shift roles as fast as I do. This fall I had the chance to put the Crooked River through its paces on a variety of adventures, and it quickly became a dependable part of my kit.

Benchmade has a story that fits the spirit of the outdoors. The company’s origins trace back to founder Les de Asis, whose lifelong connection to knives inspired the creation of Bali-Song Knives, a shop dedicated to crafting traditional Filipino butterfly knives. Drawing from his Filipino heritage and a commitment to precision craftsmanship, Les built a reputation for quality that set the foundation for the brand. The company eventually moved north to Oregon and evolved into Benchmade. From there the lineup expanded beyond custom pieces to include knives built for the rugged landscape around them, reflecting Oregon’s wild character with tools designed for tactical use, the outdoors, water, and even the kitchen.

About the Benchmade Crooked River

The Benchmade Crooked River is built for everyday use in the outdoors and has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile large folders in the company’s Hunt series. The knife measures 9.3 inches when open with a four-inch blade that provides plenty of cutting surface for field tasks. When closed it sits at 5.3 inches and carries securely with a pocket clip that holds firmly to a pant pocket or pack strap. The Crooked River uses Benchmade’s AXIS lock, which offers smooth one-handed operation and a reliable, ambidextrous locking system that feels both strong and intuitive.

The blade features a classic clip point profile shaped for precision work. A clip point blade excels at skinning, piercing, and detailed tasks, making it especially useful for hunters who need accuracy and control. The Crooked River is made with premium CPM Magnacut steel, a modern high-performance steel known for its exceptional balance of edge retention, corrosion resistance, and toughness. It maintains a sharp edge in the field while standing up to moisture, blood, and heavy use.

The Crooked River pairs its blade with a black finish and a handle made from aluminum and canvas micarta. Canvas micarta is formed from layers of fabric and resin that create a durable, comfortable, and grippy surface, even when wet or cold. This combination gives the knife a refined yet rugged feel, blending modern materials with a traditional outdoor aesthetic.

All Benchmade knives come with a lifetime warranty, and the company’s Lifesharp service provides free sharpening, cleaning, and maintenance for the life of the knife.

Thoughts on the Benchmade Crooked River Knife

The Benchmade Crooked River Knife is a masterpiece. Right out of the box you can tell it is more than just a tool. The detail, the finish, and the craftsmanship make it feel like something special. On my last hunting trip, during a quick lunch break on the hillside, the knife actually became the center of conversation. My hunting partners kept passing it around, admiring the build quality and the feel of the blade. It is always telling when seasoned hunters stop what they are doing just to appreciate a knife.

Despite its beauty, the Crooked River is a true workhorse. It fits into every part of my outdoor life. Whether I am fishing, hunting, camping, or working around the house and yard, the knife feels like it belongs in my hand. It has the presence of a collector’s piece but the attitude of a tool that was meant to get dirty.

Hunting

Hunting is where I am most excited to let the Crooked River shine. Long days in the backcountry are usually when I reach for a knife the most. The obvious tasks are skinning and quartering, especially when light is fading or when you are deep in the timber and need precision more than anything else. Unfortunately, the animals did not cooperate much during my late-season hunts, so I did not get to fully test it on a fresh harvest. Still, I am eager to see how the clip point performs when working around delicate areas like backstraps, tenderloins, and the seams of the hindquarters where accuracy matters. Even without a fresh field test this season, I used it to prep elk steaks from an earlier harvest, and it handled the detail work beautifully.

Magnacut

The combination of the clip point and the Magnacut stainless steel sets this knife apart. Clip points can sometimes have a weak spot near the taper, especially when a little prying or twisting sneaks into the job. This is something that often happens when working around the ball joint of the hip or when removing a skull for a pack out. Magnacut brings some extra peace of mind. It adds toughness where it counts while still keeping the corrosion resistance that stainless steel is known for. I think about my trips to Alaska where knives are constantly wet and often exposed to saltwater, and I know Magnacut will be a game changer in those environments.

The blade sharpness is outstanding. Combined with its length, it becomes a perfect single tool for outdoor cooking. It slices elk steaks cleanly and smoothly for tacos, and it even handles tomatoes without squishing them, something that usually requires a serrated blade. I also love building charcuterie boards on float trips, and this knife makes easy work of cheese, sausage, fruit, and vegetables. It truly checks every box for camp kitchen duty.

On the Water

On the water, the Crooked River continues to impress. It cleans soft fish easily and the pointed tip helps with the fine work around pin bones and rib cages. I am especially looking forward to using it during ice fishing season. When your hands are freezing and you need a knife that makes quick, clean cuts, this one will be perfect.

The size surprised me in the best way. When I first ordered it, I worried it might feel bulky. I was completely wrong. Clipped in the pocket, the knife rides comfortably and disappears until I need it. I can hike, sit, or climb in and out of a truck without noticing it, which means it ends up coming along on every adventure.

My Soon To Be Favorite Feature

After a summer and fall of solid use, I am already looking forward to sending the Crooked River back to Benchmade for a little TLC. Benchmade’s Lifesharp service is something I appreciate more each year. Knowing I can get the knife professionally cleaned, sharpened, and tuned after a long hunting season gives me even more confidence to use it hard. The Crooked River has handled everything I have thrown at it so far, and I know that a quick visit back to the people who made it will have it feeling brand new again.
