CORE Instant Screen House Review: A Great Upgrade for Bug-Free Camping

I spend a lot of time camping in West Michigan, and one thing I always needed was better protection from mosquitoes and bugs. Summer camping here can get rough once the bugs come out. Even though it’s still early in the season, my family and I recently took our camper down to Orange Beach, Alabama, and that gave me a great chance to test out this screen house.

CORE Instant Screen House Setup and Ease of Use

One of the best things about CORE products is how simple they make setup, and this screen house follows the same basic system. You pull the frame apart, lay the top over it, and push up from the center until it locks into place. The center push system works well, and the extended handle makes it easier to reach. The oversized buttons on the legs are easy to press, and the different height settings give you a lot of flexibility.

That said, this setup takes a little more effort than my other CORE canopies. Since this screen house has more sides and more legs than a standard square canopy, it feels heavier and needs a little more attention while opening it. Some of the extra legs can drag while you spread it out, so I had to move carefully. Adjusting the height also took more time than my other canopies.

But I was still able to set it up and take it down by myself, however having one or two extra people would definitely make the process easier.

Bug Protection and Comfort of the CORE Instant Screen House

This is where this screen house really stands out. The mesh screen goes all the way down to the ground, which makes a huge difference when bugs are out. The mesh keeps mosquitoes away while still letting air flow through, so it never feels stuffy inside.

It has two zippered doors placed on opposite sides, which makes getting in and out easy. The zippers feel smooth and sturdy. I’m 6 feet tall, and at full height I could walk through the opening without thinking much about it. My brother-in-law is 6’4″, and he would probably need to duck a little, even at the highest setting.

Another feature I really like is that the screen walls roll up and secure neatly at the top. This gives you the option to open it up when bugs aren’t a problem or when you want more airflow.

Performance in Wind and Different Conditions

While we were in Alabama, we had a windy day at the campground, so I rolled the screens up. Even though the mesh allows airflow, the screen walls still catch some wind and can make the canopy move more than a regular open canopy.

CORE did a great job thinking through the details here. The screen wraps around each leg and secures tightly. There’s also a hook at the bottom of each panel that clips to the leg so the screen stays down and doesn’t flap around.

The canopy also includes attached guylines stored in a built-in pouch near the top. I really liked this feature because it keeps everything neat and out of the way when not in use. At the campground, I set the canopy up on pavement, but I still ran the guylines out into the grass and staked them down. That gave it plenty of stability.

The swivel foot pads are another nice touch. They adjust well on uneven ground and have holes for stakes. CORE also includes stakes for both the guylines and the legs, so if you use everything they give you, this setup feels very secure.

This screen house weighs about 48 pounds, so it’s definitely heavier than a standard pop-up canopy. That extra weight makes sense because of the larger frame, steel poles, and added screen structure.

Even with the extra weight, CORE makes transport pretty easy. The wheeled carry bag is well designed and gives you enough room to pack everything without fighting it. I really appreciate that because too many products barely fit back into the bag once you use them.

This bag has a smart expandable zipper that gives you extra room while packing. Once everything is inside, you can zip it down tighter and use the compression straps to secure it. It also has carrying handles and wheels, which makes moving it around much easier.

The Verdict on the CORE Instant Screen House

Overall, I’m really happy with the CORE 11.5′ x 10′ Center Push Instant Screen House. It gives me the bug protection I’ve been missing, still provides great airflow, and feels durable enough for regular camping use. It takes a little more effort to set up than a standard canopy, but the added comfort and protection make it worth it.

If you camp often, go to sporting events, tailgates, or spend a lot of time outside, this is a great option. At $279.99, I think it’s a solid value for the quality and features you get.
