With colder temps upon us, having a soft warm cozy fleece is one of my favorite things. Having to live in 90 degree temps through the most of summer, all most people want is to get some colder weather and be able to put on a pair of jeans and a fleece without sweating out 20lbs.
I’ve been testing the Helly Hansen Daybreaker Hoodie over the past few months in the high country of Colorado, also known as the Rocky Mountains. Lucky for me, the temperatures would get down in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s which is great weather to see if the cold weather products stand up to what the marketing teams say they do.
The Helly Hansen Daybreaker Hoodie is most likely a casual piece for many, but I really like when a product can work both in performance situations as well as casual situations. To test out the Daybreaker Hoodie, I wore this fleece hoodie as my outer and mid layer while hiking up some of Colorado’s 14,000 ft mountains. The material used in this fleece is 100 g fleece by Polartec, which is one of the lightweight breathable high-end materials that is often stronger, warmer, and pills up less than non-Polartec fleece. In the hood, there is a heavier fleece that helps give you a little added protection in case you end up in a place that’s cold and windy.
The fit of the Helly Hansen Daybreaker Hoodie is snug to normal for Americans. Helly Hansen claims that the fit is relaxed, but their fit is often a little smaller and tighter than American brands such as TNF. I tested out a size medium and I found the hoodie to fit well, I’m 6’0, 173lbs. For storage, the HH Daybreaker has two non-zippered pockets on each side of the hoodie. These pockets keep your hands warm, but I don’t like to put valuables in these pockets as I tend to lose things easily.
Overall, I like the Daybreaker Hoodie as it can be used in both technical and casual situations.
