I am an avid hiker and ultramarathon runner that spends a lot of time in the woods. I am always interested in the latest outer gear that can keep me comfortable while exploring. The Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 is a phenomenal professional grade jacket perfect for trekking in wet and windy conditions, or even in colder snowier weather. It is designed for people that live and play in the mountains, although it is great for all people looking for outdoor adventure especially in inclement weather.
Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 Style meets Tech:
As soon as you put on this jacket you can feel the quality, and well thought out design. I really liked the color options; they are stylish and unique, but you can also go traditional. It comes in Sage, Ocean, Patrol Orange and Black. With built in RECCO technology and must have features this is a jacket you want when it counts.
Material details:
Helly Tech® advertises as Waterproof and Breathable, two things that are often desired, but hard to pull off. I put that to the test, and it is indeed both of those things.
In addition to how it feels while wearing it, you can feel good that it is made of a lot of recycled material.
- Shell: 68% Polyamide (Recycled), 32% Polyamide
Lining: 100% Polyester - PFC Free DWR
- No need to tumble dry- and has a low environment impact.
- It is also very light at 22.1oz but the material feels very durable.

Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 Jacket Construction:
Every side of this jacket is adjustable and easy to get the perfect fit. I used this in a range of weather conditions from cooler 40 degrees, to very cold weather conditions, 20 degrees with strong wind. The jacket fits well and has some space so you can add base layers underneath. I am 5’10 and 175lbs and the medium was true to size.

Zipper construction
The zippers are high quality with strong plastic pulls that make it very easy to use, and unlikely to break even with very consistent use. You can also see how well it seals to help with waterproofing especially along the seams.

Extremely waterproof
The first thing I wanted to try was to see how well it kept out water. Having been stuck on the trail with rain penetrating my jacket before, I wanted to be sure this would not happen again. I fully saturated the jacket. You can see in the close-up photo; the jacket is easily keeping out the water. Once you zip this up and lock down the sleeves and hood it is amazing how the wind glances off you, that was unexpected but appreciated. I would say one of the keys to staying warm is to make sure you have appropriate base layers underneath. Something to note is this jacket by itself is not insulated at all, it is a shell. The shell combined with a warm base layer/s will give you adequate protection when the temperature drops.

Pockets for all essentials
I love to be able carry things hands free when I am hiking. This jacket comes well equipped with enough space to carry everything you need.
Three main pockets make up the storage potential of this jacket. The first pocket on the chest is not large, but can fit a regular size phone. It is a handy spot to keep things you need often because of the accessibility. I used this for a pair of gloves and could still fit my phone in easily.
The pockets on the side are huge and zip both from the bottom and the top. You can decide how much room you need or what kind of access you want. I fit an extra base layer shirt inside when I wasn’t sure how cold it was going to get. Plenty of space for gloves or other essentials on both sides. In addition, there is a stash pocket on both sides so that you can hold even more. The stash pocket was big enough for my headlamp and wallet to fit.

RECCO included
RECCO Advanced Technology equipped
This was my first piece of outdoor gear with this feature. At its core RECCO technology makes it possible for recue personal to find you. This technology is used worldwide and doesn’t require a battery. The tag on the jacket is passive and rescue personnel have an active detector. The extra security of knowing that you can be found if things go wrong is nice peace of mind.

Adjustable Pit Zips
I have experienced outdoor waterproof gear that gets very hot especially when it’s raining. The huge adjustable pit zip vents on the side can really enhance the breathability and cool you down during hard efforts.
Another feature that stood out to me is the zipper goes all the way up the storm flap/chin guard covering your neck and part of your face from the wind and rain. When this is zipped up fully it feels like you can take on any weather.

Hood Adjustment
The hood is very adjustable both vertical and horizontal to ensure the absolute best fit depending on the activity, and you can easily fit a hat or a helmet underneath.
Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 Jacket Performance Test: 5 mile hike
When I started the hike the temperature was 37 degrees, slight rain, and low wind. I was not moving fast but did use the vents on the side to cool down about mid-way in. I had the hood on to repel the rain and because there wasn’t much wind, I heated up quickly. The jacket remained comfortable as I ascended up steep hills and jogged down. I made some slight adjustments to the hood and cuffs for an optimal fit. Upon my return I checked to see if any water had gotten in anywhere. Other than where I messed around with the hood, I was completely dry.
Summary of Helly Hansen Odin 9 Worlds 3.0 Jacket:
I found this to be a very well-made jacket built for all conditions. It is top of the line with the price to match. If you are serious about the outdoors and want to make sure you have all of the features, this is a great choice by a trusted manufacturer. I can’t wait to take this on my next hike!
