Review – A Shirt that keeps you Bug Bite Free?!

White Sierra Swamp Long Sleeve Tee

There are not a lot of things that can damper an outdoor activity like insects. From mosquitoes to ticks, or chiggers to no-see-ums, no one wants to spend their time swatting them away or dealing with the misery of a bite. Sure, you can spray repellent and have the greasy, smelly, burning skin thing going for you. But for me, I only use bug spray as a last resort, I don’t like the smell and I find that Deet, which works the best, tends to give my skin a burning sensation. Well, White Sierra believes they have a solution, in the form of the Swamp Long Sleeve Tee. Let’s check it out….

First Look at the White Sierra Swamp Long Sleeve Tee

The White Sierra Swamp Long Sleeve Tee is 60% cotton, 40% polyester Marsh Jersey knit fabric. The fabric has been pre-washed, giving the shirt and exceptionally soft feel to it.

The star component of the shirt is the Insect Shield. What is Insect Shield? Well let me tell you. It consists of a process that binds a proprietary permethrin (bug repellent) formula tightly to the fabric fibers of the shirt, resulting in an odorless insect protection that is supposed to last the expected lifetime of the apparel. Insect Shield claims to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums). That seems like a brilliant idea to me, we will see if it holds true in the testing.

With the shirt being made up of cotton and polyester it has natural moisture wicking properties that will help keep you cool and dry in the heat.

The Swamp Tee also has built-in UPF sun protection that will help shield your skin against harmful UV rays.

The shirt is finished of with a contrast-color topstitching that adds a nice touch of style. Let’s take this bug blocker out into the wild and see what it will do…

Testing Out the White Sierra Swamp Long Sleeve Tee

Rather than wash the shirt right off the bat, I figured I would just jump right in and give it a try. The thought in the back of my mind was once I wash this thing, the insect repelling properties would vanish.

What better place to test the tee than sitting around a campfire at night, at least I will be a stationary target for all of those pesky mosquitoes.  With the rest of my friends and family showering themselves in stinky bug spray, I was able to kick back and enjoy the campfire. To my surprise, I seemed to be the only one not swatting at the bugs, every once in awhile I could hear mosquitoes buzz by my ear, but I did not get a single bite the whole night. What an enjoyable experience!

And now to wash the tee, hopefully the Insect Shield holds.

Here is the one and only downfall of the tee, and it real is hard to call it one, but for the amount of laundry my family does, it feels like it…the Swamp Tee has to be washed separately from regular clothing, it can however be washed with similar treated clothes. In my case this is the only Insect Shield item that I own, so my options are run a small load in the wash (seems like a waste of water), hand wash (yeah right) or buy more Insect Shield clothing (seems like the logical thing to do). Truly a downfall? I will let you be the judge.

Looking for those Insects

With the Swamp Tee washed, I fully expected the bugs to come at me like a fresh piece of meat. So I decided to go right where they are most prevalent, deep into the woods. After a couple hour hike through the woods, I came out with a bite on my neck and a bite on my hand. I know what you are thinking, but the shirt is not a force field bubble. It states on the tag, “For protection of the exposed skin, use in conjunction with an insect repellent registered for direct application to skin.” I did not do that. If I had gone into the woods with a regular tee, I am not sure that I would not have survived two hours, more than likely I would have high tailed out of the woods covered in hundreds of bug bites. So, to come out of the deep woods with only two bites on just the protection of the Swamp Tee, it was a huge win!

Bring it on Bugs!
