When I first tried on the Backcountry Xtera Heated Vest, I immediately noticed how lightweight yet warm it felt. I’ve always loved being cozy and warm, but Michigan’s unpredictable weather can make that a challenge, especially when one hour it feels like fall and the next feels like winter. This vest filled a gap in my wardrobe I didn’t even realize I had. It’s now one of those pieces I grab without even thinking. Whether I’m heading to work, running errands, or going to an outdoor event, I know I’ll be comfortable.

The outer shell is made from durable 100% nylon with a Waterpell DWR finish, which has been great for repelling light rain. I tested that out unintentionally one morning when a few drops caught me off guard. The water rolled right off without soaking in. The vest also has two zippered external hand pockets that have been perfect for keeping my hands warm or securing small essentials on the go. Inside, there are two more pockets, one zippered pocket that’s ideal for valuables like keys or a card, and one open pocket that works well for stashing gloves or a phone. The PrimaLoft ThermoPlume synthetic insulation does a fantastic job mimicking real down. It’s soft, compressible, and traps heat beautifully without adding bulk. Even though natural down is still a touch warmer, I love that this synthetic insulation stays warm and is easy to care for.

The heating system is where this vest really stands out. It has three heat zones, two on the chest and one on the back, that distribute warmth evenly. The heat is powered by a 7.4V rechargeable lithium-ion battery tucked neatly into one of the pockets. I barely notice the presence of the heat zones or the battery pack.

The Bluetooth connectivity makes it super convenient. I can adjust the temperature right from my phone using the MW Connect app, and even name the vest in the app so it’s easy to control if I’m using other heated gear. On a full charge, I usually get a full day’s use, up to 9 hours on low, which is plenty for what I need.

The fit is flattering and thoughtfully designed. The tapered waist and drop-tail hem give it a nice shape while still leaving enough room for layering. It’s comfortable over a hoodie or under a shell and doesn’t feel bulky or stiff. The fabric is soft to the touch, and the quilting feels evenly filled without any awkward bunching. Every time I zip it up, it feels like being wrapped in a warm, lightweight hug which is a feeling that’s hard to give up once you’ve experienced it.

How I’ve Used It

Early Morning Work Commutes:
Michigan mornings can be chilly even when the forecast says mild. I’ve worn the Xtera Vest over a lightweight sweater on my way to work, and it’s made the transition from car to office so much more comfortable. I usually keep it on until we open our doors because the gentle warmth makes even sitting at a desk feel cozier.

At Cedar Point During Halloweekends:
When I visited Cedar Point for their Halloween event, the temperature dropped quickly after sunset. I had the vest layered over a long-sleeve tee, and it was perfect for standing in line and walking between rides. The back heating zone especially kept me comfortable while sitting on cold benches. I didn’t have to pile on heavy coats or keep adjusting layers which made riding the rides more comfortable. The warmth stayed consistent and adjustable all night.

Football Game at WMU:
At a late-season Western Michigan University football game (Go Broncos!), the bleachers were freezing. I wore the vest under a thick coat, and it was a game changer. The heat lasted the entire evening and the ride home. It was one of the few times I’ve stayed warm sitting through a chilly November game.

Weekend Errands and Outdoor Chores:
It’s also become first option for running weekend errands, walking the dog, or even doing quick outdoor chores like sweeping leaves or unloading groceries. I don’t have to commit to a full winter coat, and I can stay warm without overheating. The vest adjusts easily if I move between the cold outdoors and warm stores or indoor spaces.

Travel and “Just-in-Case” Layer:

It’s so lightweight and packs down small, I keep it in my car as a backup layer. On road trips, I’ve used it as a cozy wrap in the car. The vest keeps me perfectly warm without cranking up the heat in the car which my husband appreciates. It’s become my little portable comfort zone.
