Traveling to the tropics requires lightweight, comfortable clothing, so when I planned my trip to Belize this past summer, I was excited to add Free Fly Apparel to my packing list. Founded with a passion for life on the water, Free Fly designs innovative, comfortable clothing for outdoor adventure. Even better, they’re now a certified B Corp, meeting the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.
Free Fly has spent the last decade perfecting bamboo as a performance fabric, and the results show. Their bamboo apparel is soft, breathable, anti-odor, moisture-wicking, sun protective, and sustainably sourced—perfect for hot, humid climates. For my Caribbean travels, I packed the Women’s Bamboo-Lined Active Breeze Short and the Women’s Bamboo Current Tank. Having loved other Free Fly pieces like the Wavebound Swim and Bamboo Flex Hoodie, I was eager to test this new combo.
Free Fly Women’s Bamboo-Lined Active Breeze Short

This summer’s redesigned Active Breeze Short keeps the same breathable feel and comfortable knit waistband but with thoughtful updates. The shell is an ultralight recycled polyester/spandex blend, while the liner combines bamboo viscose, polyester, and spandex for softness and stretch.
In Belize’s heat, the fabric felt airy, cool, and gentle against my skin. I especially liked the wide waistband, which fits high-waisted near the belly button and has a stretchy, swimsuit-like feel. The bamboo liner was breathable, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying, perfect for pulling on after snorkeling. Even better, the shorts didn’t wrinkle in my suitcase, making them ideal for travel.

High waisted with wide comfortable waistband
Back home, they’ve become my go-to for jogging and hiking. The breathable liner and ultralight shell move easily with me and keep sweat from becoming uncomfortable. I chose the 5-inch inseam for flattering full coverage (a 3-inch version is also available) and the color Storm Cloud, a versatile bluish-gray. My size XS fit true to size.
Other details worth mentioning: the shorts feature two small but functional pockets: one card-sized stash pocket in the waistband and a secure zippered side pocket. While compact, they’re handy for cash, keys, or cards, especially useful for quick tiki bar runs on the island.

Free Fly Women’s Bamboo Current Tank

Paired with the shorts, the Bamboo Current Tank made the perfect travel outfit. The cotton-bamboo blend feels buttery soft, with a flattering muscle tank–inspired silhouette that’s loose, airy, and slightly cropped. I appreciated the extra coverage it provided under the Belizean sun, while still keeping me cool.

Comfortable sun coverage
What I love most is its versatility. At home, it’s become a wardrobe staple, easy to wear on hikes, to yoga, with jeans, or even dressed up for work. The fabric has a t-shirt feel with the bonus of four-way stretch, making it functional for both casual and active settings.
I chose the Redwood color, a deep clay tone that pairs easily with most of my wardrobe. The tank is available in four other colors, and my size small fit as expected.
