Don’t let the name of this product throw you; the nearest beach to my house is 16 hours and I love this bike basket! You know how when you didn’t know that you needed something? That’s how it was with the Alki Beach Basket from Detours. My cruiser has two metal baskets in the back. More than sufficient for what I need. But then we put on the Alki basket and I thought, “Where have you been all my life?”
The Alki Beach Basket from Detours attaches to the front of your bike on the handlebars. My husband did the attaching part. His feedback was that since the handlebars are small that he had to add material to the bars to make the quick-release system fit. He cut up old inner tubes and wrapped them around the handlebars. That solved the problem and it was a great recycling opportunity for my old flatted tubes from my mountain bike. That isn’t a defect. It just means I have skinny handlebars. Once the Alki Beach Basket was attached, I thought it was so cute, I invented errands to do on my bike.
The Alki Beach Basket is designed to be taken off (thus the quick-release system) when you get to the store that way you only buy what you can carry. The basket is quite comfortable to carry with two reinforced handles. Once the shopping is done, you re-attach. Easy peasy. The basket carries up to 12 lbs. Inside of the basket is a small wallet pouch. It’s a perfect place to stash your keys, cell phone and grocery list. The wallet pouch is also detachable in case you aren’t taking the basket into the store but still want a handy place for your precious items. The basket also has a draw string that you can use to close the top to protect your items from the elements.
The Alki Beach basket comes in three colors; orange, grey and a dark red. Mine is the orange (with a lovely poppy flower compliments of artist Herman Yu) and looks great on my blue Schwinn cruiser. I imagine these baskets would also work great on hybrids and townie bikes. And don’t forget you don’t need a beach to take full advantage of this super cool basket. The Detours Alki Beach Basket actually made me ride my bike more. It made me want to buy flowers and shop at the local farmer’s market. I don’t know if it will do that for you but it’s worth a try.
