Hiboy is company that is well known for their electric scooters and after having huge success in the e-scooter category, they have decided to take their expert knowledge into the e-bike market with two builds, a commuter e-bike and a fat tire e-bike. The fact that I tend to favor trails and gravel more than pavement, I opted to check out the P6 fat tire electric bike to see what it is all about.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Unboxing

The Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike arrived well packed in a standard cardboard e-bike box. Unboxing the P6 revealed no damage, thanks to all of the foam packing. The Hiboy P6 requires only just a bit of assembly and comes with everything you need to get it done. The handlebars, headlamp, pedals, seat and front tire need to be added to the frame. Assembly took less than ten minutes and was straight forward.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Build

The Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike frame is constructed with a 6061 Aluminum which offers a solid and sturdy build that weighs in at 65 lbs. with a weight limit of 265lbs. What I noticed about the P6 right off the bat is that there are no extra bells and whistles – no fenders, no rack, no taillight, no huge complicated display – and for me, this is not a bad thing, because it keeps the price down. And as long as the P6 delivers a good build and worthy components that provide a comfortable and powerful ride, I can always add accessories in the future if I find that this e-bike needs them.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Motor

The Hiboy P6 is equipped with a brushless 750W Bafang motor, by far one of the most recognized names and top notch rear hub e-bike motors on the market. The Bafang motor offers a sizable torque rating of 80NM (Newton Meters) that really helps with hill climbing and fast take offs.

Going with a 750w motor on a fat tire e-bike makes riding more efficient and definitely a whole lot easier, whether it is on sand, the trails or even cruising down the road.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Battery

The 13Ah 624WH battery on the P6 is integrated on the down tube of the frame and held securely in place with a key lock. The battery can be charged on or off the bike with the included 2A charger, requiring approximately 7 hours to get a full charge from empty. Spec wise the P6’s battery falls right inline with most of the fat tire e-bikes on the market, nothing to complain about, but nothing meritorious either.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Display

The LCD display is mounted on the left hand side handle bar and shows a graphic of the state of charge, pedal assist mode, total miles ridden, trip miles, current speed and warning indicators. The display has a backlight and is easily readable in both direct sunlight and low / no light riding, making monitoring of battery reserves easy. Just below the display is a USB port that can be used to charge smart phones or other small electronics should the need arise when you are out riding.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Tires

The Hiboy P6 is equipped with Chao Yang 26″ x 4″ fat tires. While these are not necessarily considered a top of the line brand, they have been more than adequate, delivering plenty of grip on trails and offering a smooth, comfortable and stable ride on gravel roads. They also adapt nicely to paved roads and concrete, and transition seamlessly to dirt and sand.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Brakes

Hiboy went with a JAK Super Brake setup with 180mm mechanical discs and Wuxing levers. Which I have never had any experience with before. The first couple of rides had some initial brake squeaking that did fade. But, overall the JAK Super Brake setup delivered plenty of stopping power and the 180mm discs supplies the confidence that unexpected obstacles or tight turns can be quickly and easily navigated.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Gears

Propelling the P6 forward is a 9-speed Shimano Altus gear system that provides smooth shifting and plenty of gears to deliver the flexibly to tackle almost any terrain.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Suspension

The front fork on the P6 has built-in suspension that improves shock absorption and delivers smooth riding. The suspension fork has 80mm of travel that helps cushion bumps along the ride and depending on your preference, the suspension fork can be locked out as a rigid fork, which yields higher efficiency while pedaling. The lockout lever located on top of the right side of the suspension fork, can be turned clockwise until it stops to completely lock out the suspension fork’s travel. To unlock the lockout lever, turn the knob counterclockwise until it stops.

When the lockout lever is unlocked, resistance can be adjusted by turning the preload adjustment knob, located on the top of the left side of the suspension fork. To soften the ride, subtract resistance by turning the preload adjustment knob counterclockwise, in the direction of the small “-” on the knob. To make the suspension ride better when going over bumps, add resistance by turning the preload adjustment knob clockwise, in the direction of the small “+” on the knob. Both of these add nice personalized suspension that improve the ride experience on the Hiboy P6.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Headlight

The 300 Lumen front head light provides visibility as well as viewability for low light and dark riding. Best of all it has it’s own switch on the handlebar that allows you to turn it on and off without having to fumble through a complicated display menu.

Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike Ride Experience

When riding the Hiboy P6 Fat Tire Electric Bike, you feel like it can take on almost any terrain. Using the nine gears while implementing one of five pedal assist levels the P6 gives you the ability to tackle tough climbs and go much farther and much faster for any given level of effort. The Hiboy P6 is truly a delight to ride on trails and gravel roads. And it easily transitions to bike paths and roads, while the half twist throttle makes running errands and trips to the beach a cool and comfortable ride without breaking a sweat. The battery packs plenty of power for a 30 mile trip with the throttle alone and if you add pedaling to the mix the P6 can tackle upwards of 50 and 60 miles.
