SmartWool is known for their ability to incorporate merino wool into active wear that is not only fun, as well as functional. We recently tested out their arm warmers and were pleased to find that they far exceeded our expectations. The arm warmers are constructed from merino wool (63%), nylon (32%), and elastic (5%). Because merino wool is the main fiber, they are soft against the skin and more comfortable than other arm warmers’ we have worn that are made from synthetic fabrics. The arm warmers have a 1-inch wide welt at the wrist to keep them in place and just the right amount of elastic at the bicep area to keep them in place while you are on the move.
We have been wearing the arm warmers while trail running and out on the bike when temps are tad cool at the beginning of the day and there is a quick warm up when the sun comes out. The arm warmers are breathable-lightweight and very packable, making it easy to stash in a pack or bike jersey.
We were given the plain black arm warmers to test out, which are definitely gender neutral and have been warn by both female and male testers. However, on www.smartwool.com, there are some super fun stripe patterns that our female tester would love to call her own. The arm warmers retail for $25, which we feel is a fair price for an accessory that can come in handy when you want a little extra warmth.
The only draw back we found is the sizing; the arm warmers come in small/medium and large/extra large. The merino is highly stretchy and can accommodate various shapes, however the elastic at the bicep is the key to keeping them in place and may not fit everyone. We tested the small/medium arm warmers which were a perfect fit for our female tester that is 5’9” and 138 lbs, but were a tad tight for our male tester that is 6’0” and 170 lbs. The large/extra-large was a bit big for his bicep region. Going with combined sizing may leave out some potential wearers, including smaller gals. With that said, if the SmartWool arm warmers fit you, they are a great item to add to your accessory basket.
