If you’ve been following our ebike reviews for a while, you’ll recognize the name Puckipuppy. This is review number four for us from the brand…and at this point, we kind of know what to expect. Solid design…Reliable…Fairly priced. The Puckipuppy Doberman Ebike fits right into that pattern. It’s clearly built for people who just want a smart, lightweight commuter that doesn’t dominate their living space or feel like overkill for a daily ride.
If you’ve been scrolling through the endless sea of heavy, bulky ebikes and thought, “Ugh, how am I supposed to haul that thing up three flights of stairs?”… yeah, we see you. We get it. That feeling of dread when you pull up to your apartment or office building and realize you have to play elevator-or-stairs-roulette with a 70+ pound ebike beast? That’s the exact frustration the Doberman is built to solve. Let’s dig in and see what the Doberman has in store.
Unboxing & Assembly: Twenty Minutes to Freedom (Mostly)
Pulling the Doberman out of the box, the first thing I noticed wasn’t the motor or the welds… it was how absurdly easy the whole thing was to lift. I actually paused for a second, waiting for that familiar oh wow, this is heavy moment…and it never came. The last time I unboxed a ride this manageable, it was a regular pedal bike…you know the kind everyone used to ride before ebikes. Being able to one‑hand the Doberman up and out of the box was surprising, in the best way.
Assembly was straightforward. Attaching the front tire, fender, handlebars, display, and headlight. Everything you need is in the box, almost. It took about 20 minutes total until it was road-ready. Now, here’s a little aside…and a reminder that no review is ever perfect. They included all the Allen keys, plus a pedal and tire wrench, but the front light mount needed a Phillips screwdriver and a small wrench…neither of which were included. And the light itself? The rubber grommet made it sit kinda wonky and off-center on the bars. It works, it’s just…meh. Little things, right? But hey, a 20-minute setup is still a huge win when you’re itching to get riding.

Build Quality: Lighter Than Your Average Lab
The absolute star of this whole show, the reason you buy this bike, is the weight. At only 42 pounds, the Puckipuppy Doberman is practically a featherweight in the ebike world. Forty-two pounds! You can shoulder this bike and march up a few floors to your office or apartment without feeling like you just finished a Crossfit session. It moves from being a commuter vehicle to a portable one, and that distinction is everything.

The frame itself is solid, the welds are clean, and the geometry is integrated and tidy. Plus, it has an adjustable stem, which is a nice touch for dialing in that perfect posture…whether you want to lean in for speed or sit up for a casual cruise.
Motor: The Whisper-Quiet Helper
Don’t let the lightness fool you; this little guy has some pep. It’s got a 350-watt motor that peaks up to 600W. That’s top-tier performance for an ultralight commuter.

What you feel is quicker pick-up and smoother acceleration. Because the bike weighs so much less, the motor doesn’t have to work as hard to get you moving. It’s like strapping a jet pack onto a bicycle instead of a forklift. You’re always one move ahead in traffic. No need to choose between power and portability here; you just shift up and ride higher.
Torque & Cadence Sensor: It Just Knows
This is the tech that makes the Doberman feel expensive and intuitive. Unlike cheaper bikes that use a basic cadence sensor (which just goes “on” when you pedal), the Doberman features a torque-sensing system.
This means the bike instantly knows how hard you are pedaling and adjusts the motor power to match. Starting and stopping through city traffic? Seamless. Pushing up a surprisingly long incline? The response feels like the bike knows what you need before you do. It’s not jerky or sudden; it’s just smooth, efficient, and makes you feel like an Olympic cyclist…without having to put in the Olympic effort.
Battery: Right-Sized for Reality
The battery is a 360Wh unit. Yes, that is smaller than many others out there, but guess what? That’s what keeps the weight down!

This battery isn’t trying to break any long-distance records. It’s about powering the routes you actually ride. In most cases it is going to easily cover weekday commutes and weekend errands. If you’re a heavy-footed rider, expect to be on the lower end of the advertised 45-70 mile range. If your commute is under, say, 15 miles round-trip, you can probably charge it once or twice a week and forget about range anxiety. It’s efficiency and weight-savings over brute force range, and for a city commuter, that’s the right trade-off.

Propriety Charger – Battery can be charged on or off the bike.
Drivetrain & Components
- Drivetrain: A 7-speed Shimano setup. It’s standard fair. Trusty, reliable, and you can find a part for it anywhere. Nothing groundbreaking, which is actually a good thing; it just works.

- Headlight & Taillight: The integrated headlight works, and they included a non-integrated, clip-on USB rechargeable taillight. It’s not a top-of-the-line system, but at least they’ve covered the basics for visibility. It is a bit meh, as mentioned with the mounting, but it gets the job done.

- Seat: The seat is comfortable, designed for commuters, not touring. It’s a bit firmer than the couch-like seats you find on fat tires, which is better for efficient city pedaling. I especially love that the post can accommodate riders over six feet (thank you, Puckipuppy!).

- Tires & Brakes: You get 28″ x 1.75″ narrow, grippy tires…perfect for pavement and light gravel. The 160mm hydraulic disc brakes are also perfectly sized for this lightweight bike, offering great, confident stopping power.
- Cockpit & Display: The handgrips are smooth and comfortable enough. The controls are easy to access. You get the newer, brighter Color LCD that clearly shows your speed, distance, battery and assist level.

Riding the Doberman: The Glide of a Lifetime
So, what’s it actually like to ride? It’s like floating. That combination of the low weight and the torque sensor makes for a super smooth ride. Acceleration is excellent, and you have plenty of power for quick take-offs from stops…essential when you’re weaving your way out of the dreaded bike-lane traffic jam. The top speed is a respectable 26 mph, and if you put in some effort, you can push it a bit further.
Now, a couple of things to note for the purists: there is no throttle on this bike. As a pure commuter, that makes sense; you jump on and go. But if you’re looking for that button or lever to give you a blast of motor-only power, this isn’t the bike for you. Also, there’s no suspension, which is pretty standard for a minimalist commuter, but it means you’ll definitely feel the potholes. Think of it as your incentive to dodge them!

Tangent alert: You might notice our review photos were taken in the snow! Just to be clear…while this bike can technically roll through a few inches of fresh powder or packed snow, it’s absolutely NOT our first choice for winter riding. We completed most of our testing before a big snowstorm arrived and stuck around, but the photo opportunity didn’t present itself until later.
The Doberman offers a cleaner form that rides lighter, smoother, and just feels freer. It’s not meant to be a weekend dirt trail explorer. It’s designed to be the trusty tool that makes your daily grind feel less like a grind and more like a glide.
The Verdict on the Puckipuppy Doberman: The Commuter That Connects
Here’s the deal: The Puckipuppy Doberman is the perfect ebike for the city dweller or the commuter who is sick of the bulk. The focal point is, and should always be, the 42-pound weight. It simplifies urban mobility in a way that 70+ pound ebikes just can’t touch. That easy lift up the stairs, that ability to slide it into a corner of your office instead of chaining it outside…that’s the real value.
It’s minimalist, it’s efficient, and with the torque sensor, it’s a pleasure to ride. If your commute involves stairs, trains, or simply an understanding that you don’t need a beast of a bike just to get to work and back, you’re going to love the Doberman. It’s less of a toy and more of a smartly designed tool that seamlessly adapts to the city or commuter lifestyle.
