When we head into the great outdoors, we intentionally try to take time away from electronics and technology to truly appreciate all that nature has to offer. But with our modern day dependence on technology, the need to stay connected and all of the cool electronic gadgets out there, the days of no tech outings are growing fewer each year. Whether it is improving the camp site with appliances, staying connected with a laptop or touring with an e-bike, these all need power and there is no better way to bring power into the outdoors than with a portable battery generator. Which is why we decided to pickup the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO and a set of SolarPower 2 solar panels to see how they would preform with our outdoor on the go active lifestyle.
Unboxing the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO
For my order, I received three boxes; two SolarPower 2 solar panels and one Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO.
Included in the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO Box is the following:
- HomePower PRO Backup Battery Power Station
- AC Charging Cable
- Car Charging Cable
- Accessory Case
- User Manual
Included in the Geneverse SolarPower 2 Box is the following:
- Solar Panel 200W
- 10-feet (3-meter) Output Cable (8mm port)
- Protection Cover
- User Manual
Everything was extremely well packaged and protected. The attention to detail and quality of the solar panel and accessory cases, and well built robust cords and cord wraps is really quite impressive.
Setting Up the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO
Geneverse claims a “30 second Hassle-Free Setup”. It really doesn’t even take that long, depending of course on what exactly you are using the HomePower ONE PRO for, but it truly is out of the box and plug a product in, push the power button on the selected input section and the ONE PRO is providing power.
The user friendly front panel is laid out simplistically with an intelligent display, a LED light, two 18w USB-A ports, two 100w USB-C ports, three 120V 60Hz outlets and four clearly labeled buttons; the Power/Display, Light, DC and AC.
To take the setup a bit further, Geneverse offers a downloadable app that connects to the HomePower ONE via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and allows you to do the following right from a smart device:
- Monitor device status, battery level, usage statistics, and more
- Turn ON/OFF power output and START/STOP charging
- Set timers to turn ON/OFF power output and to START/STOP charging
- Switch charging mode and set battery charge limit
- Monitor input and output power
- Receive notification of your device status
The app is not necessary to be able to use the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO, but it certainly adds another level of control and monitoring that is very useful and convenient.
Charging the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO
There are three ways to charge / recharge the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO, either by Wall Outlet (AC), Solar or Vehicle Outlets. The HomePower ONE PRO has a built-in Maximum-Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controller and a rapid-fast, energy-efficient solar-powered recharge that enables it to gain a full charge in 1-2 hours via wall outlet, 3-4 hours via solar panel, 7-9 hours via car. Which is incredibly fast compared to some of the other battery generators I have tested in the past, easily in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 times faster.
The rapid-fast, solar-powered recharge is truly a game changer for off grid use, as there is no longer the worry of having to get solar panels set up first thing in the morning to try to catch every little bit of sunlight. In addition, the ONE PRO is equipped with ACPS (Automatic Continuous Power System) which gives you the ability to charge the battery at the same time it powers devices for optimal battery performance and uninterrupted use.
Geneverse SolarPower 2 – All-Weather Portable Solar Panel 200W / 18V
The Geneverse SolarPower 2 solar panels are lightweight (for their size) and foldable, they have a built-in carrying handle that allows you to easily move them to the sunniest location and are equipped with three kickstands for simple angle adjustments for maximum sunlight exposure.
The SolarPower 2 panels are made from a durable Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) material, which is a fluorine-based plastic polymer that offers a far better alternative to glass and at just 1% of the weight. Each SolarPower 2 panel consists of 64 Monocrystalline solar cells. And unlike traditional solar cells, the monocrystalline cells offer 50% higher solar power conversion efficiency.
In my opinion, if you are going to manufacture a solar panel it must be somewhat waterproof for those unexpected rain showers and the SolarPower 2 is with an IP67 rating. That IP67 rating means that they have protection against the effects of immersion in water between 1 cm and 1 m, no greater than 3 feet. Which translates to; if it starts to rain and the SolarPower 2 is in use, you have about 30 minutes to bring them into a shelter and dry them off without worrying about any damage. In most scenarios you will know when inclement weather is heading your way and it is easy to plan ahead, but when the unexpected happens, it is nice knowing that these have an IP67 rating and won’t get wrecked from a bit of rain.
The power output of the SolarPower 2 is of course dependent on the weather conditions and the position and angle of the solar panel facing the sun. While I was never able to quite achieve the maximum charging output of 200 watts, it was close and easily averaged 150 watts per panel in most conditions.
The SolarPower 2 has a great portable design that allows for easy setup and transportation, so it can be moved conveniently from adventure to adventure and with the adjustable kickstand, set up and take down requires very little effort and almost no time at all.
Using the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO
The Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO has the ability to charge and support almost all of the electronic devices you would use in the outdoors with high power and up to 7 outputs that can be used simultaneously. With 1200 watts of continuous power output and 2400 watts of surge power at 120V/60Hz, there was nothing in my outdoor gear kit that it was not able to power up or charge. Even with two e-bike batteries, two phones, a laptop and a Dometic Cooler plugged in running the HomePower ONE PRO didn’t show any signs of strain and thanks to the Pure-Sine Wave inverter, the energy output was smooth and evenly regulated.
For extended weekend camping trips we have used the HomePower PRO to charge smartphones, light the campsite, run a cooler that makes ice, cook with a plug-in griddle, charge up e-bike batteries, blow up air mattresses with a plugin pump and still come home after 4 days with 10% of the battery remaining. With the HomePower PRO ONE along for the ride, outdoor power is abundant and super easy to access.
Longevity of the Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO
The HomePower ONE PRO will hold a charge for a minimum of one year after it’s fully charged. But it is recommended to use and recharging it every 6 months as the best practice to keep the product in good condition. The certified energy efficiency of the ultra-high efficiency LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries in the ONE PRO will provide over 3000 charge cycles. And after those 3000 full cycles of recharging (from 0% to 100%), the battery will still be holding at least 80% of its original capacity. So with some basic math and hypothetically using the HomePower ONE PRO everyday, it will at the very least provide 8+ years of use.
And If you adopt the best recharging practice, i.e. recharging it before the battery level drops below 25%, the capacity loss rate will improve significantly. The battery will still be holding at least 90% to 95% of its original capacity after 3000 cycles, potentially pushing the longevity well past the 10 year mark with daily use.
Every Geneverse HomePower ONE PRO undergoes 52 reliability and safety tests and is covered by their 5-year warranty.
