My 2021 Ram 1500 has a lot of modern features, but one thing it does not include is wireless CarPlay. Every time I get into the truck I need to plug my iPhone into the USB port if I want to use my phone’s navigation, music, or messaging through the Uconnect system. It works fine, but after a while the cable starts to feel annoying, especially on short drives around town.

Over the last year I kept seeing ads and posts in Ram owner groups about wireless CarPlay adapters that also let you stream videos on the infotainment screen. The idea sounded really cool to me, especially for road trips or waiting in the truck during practice or appointments. The setup process felt pretty straightforward. Since I use an iPhone, the device already came configured for Apple products right out of the box. Android users need to insert the included pin tool into a small hole on the device to switch it into Android mode.

I plugged the adapter into my truck’s USB port, connected my phone through Bluetooth, and followed the on screen prompts. The menus looked simple enough that most people who use smartphones regularly should not have trouble figuring things out. The device also includes instructions, and there are several setup videos online if you need extra help.

The adapter works as a wired to wireless CarPlay adapter, so once everything connects you no longer need to physically plug your phone into the truck each time you drive.

Wireless CarPlay Performance

Once connected, wireless CarPlay worked fairly well overall. Apps like:

I liked the convenience of getting into the truck and having my phone connect automatically without reaching for a cable. For quick errands or short drives, that convenience definitely felt nice.

The device connected to Bluetooth without delay, and the wireless CarPlay setup started quickly once I turned on the truck. Navigation, music, and calls all worked smoothly most of the time. I still noticed that wired CarPlay felt slightly faster and smoother during daily use, but the wireless connection itself stayed responsive and convenient.

The streaming features were honestly the main reason I wanted this device. The RC23 comes preloaded with apps like:

To use these apps, the adapter needs internet access through your phone’s hotspot connection. I connected the device to my iPhone hotspot and tested several YouTube videos.

The videos played pretty well when I had a strong cellular signal. I could easily see this being useful during long road trips, camping, or sitting parked somewhere while waiting for family members.

One important thing to understand is that streaming quality depends completely on your phone signal and hotspot plan. In areas with weak service, the videos buffered or stopped completely. I also realized that my AT&T plan only includes 5GB of hotspot data each month, so heavy streaming would burn through that limit quickly.

The device also allows video playback while driving. I obviously do not recommend watching videos while driving since that creates a major distraction, but passengers could definitely enjoy the feature on longer trips.

Things That Became Frustrating

After the excitement of the first few days wore off, I started noticing several glitches that became annoying during normal daily driving.

Incorrect Clock Issue

The biggest problem involved the clock on my Uconnect system. My truck relies on the infotainment screen as the main clock, and the time would constantly display several hours off unless the device actively connected to my hotspot or switched the screen to CarPlay from the Car menu screen (notice the time difference, 2:14pm vs 8:03am).

I tried:

• disabling automatic time
• manually setting the clock
• changing time zone settings

Nothing permanently fixed the issue. Every day the clock would reset again. That became surprisingly irritating because I constantly rely on that screen for the time while driving.

Hotspot Reconnection Problems

Another issue involved reconnecting to my phone hotspot. Even when my hotspot stayed enabled and worked the previous day, the adapter often refused to reconnect automatically.

I usually had to:

1. Open settings
2. Refresh the WiFi list
3. Wait for my phone to appear again
4. It would then connect

That extra step defeated part of the convenience I expected from a wireless system.

Bluetooth Connection Problems

One thing I really disliked involved Bluetooth behavior outside the truck. My phone constantly tried reconnecting to the RC23 whenever the truck sat parked in my garage.

Several times I answered phone calls inside the house and suddenly lost audio because my phone attempted routing the conversation into the truck. That became very annoying very quickly.

Why I Went Back to Wired CarPlay

After spending time with the adapter, I realized that a simple USB C cable still works better for my everyday driving.

With wired CarPlay I get:

• more reliable connections
• accurate clock display

• less frustration overall

The wireless setup felt cool at first, but small glitches added up over time. I eventually decided that reliability matters more to me during daily commuting.

Where I Still Plan to Use It

Even though I stopped using the RC23 full time, I still think it has a place.

I plan to keep it in my glovebox for:

• family road trips
• long waits in the truck
• travel days
• situations where passengers want entertainment

Kids or passengers would probably enjoy watching YouTube or Netflix during long drives much more than I would enjoy dealing with cables.

The Lamtto RC23 Wireless CarPlay Adapter gave me exactly what I expected in some ways and disappointed me in others. I liked the idea of wireless CarPlay and built in streaming apps, and when everything worked correctly it definitely felt modern and convenient. At the same time, the small glitches and connection issues stopped me from wanting to use it every single day.

I think this product works best for people who value entertainment features and occasional convenience more than perfect reliability. For road trips and passenger entertainment, it can be a really fun gadget. For daily commuting, I still prefer plugging my phone directly into the truck.
