The TRX is a simple piece of workout equipment designed to allow athletes a wide range of exercises, different motions and allow you to get a gym type workout without going to the gym. Created by a former Nave SEAL, it was designed to allow someone a quick, effective workout in a small space. Building functional strength rather than just the “beach muscles” is the focus of the TRX. The fact that it is lightweight, compact and can easily be fit in your suitcase is a big plus.
The TRX is a simple design. It is essentially a strap with a center attaching point and then adjustable handles at each end, TRX calls this a suspension design. You can attach the system to a door, or use the caribiner to attach it to an overhead bar like you would find at a park. Adjusting the system is simple as it uses cam buckles so it takes no time to fine tune. Rather than using any weights, the TRX uses your own body weight for resistance.
Now I love the gym, I won’t lie. But I’m not that guy that does 4 sets of bench and leaves. Since I run, cycle, ski and hike, my focus has always been on getting stronger and faster, not bigger. Basically, I’m that guy doing the weird exercises in the corner or commandeering the leg machines. The TRX fits perfectly with my needs.
It comes with a quick workout DVD and an exercise pamphlet with clear instructions on the exercises in the DVD. While they were both helpful, I was soon playing around and seeing what I could do with it. Other DVD’s are available depending on your sport or focus. Making up new exercises I found plenty of ways to challenge myself. I was able to do more one leg exercises as well as plyometric movements I could never do in the gym.
Not only did I do new exercises, but I was to switch exercises quickly. For instance, when doing shoulder work you can change the motion from wide to narrow, straight elbows or bent and reach different muscle groups. Even switching from an arm exercise to a leg exercise takes much less time than it would in the gym. The TRX allows for a full body workout. The cradles are made for use with your hands and sliding your feet into. Mixing the exercises and keeping things simple allows you to work your aerobic system while building muscle. This has been shown to be very effective in losing weight, and it helps if you are a runner, cyclist or other endurance athlete. I was easily able to work up a good sweat in ten minutes!
Core work has become very popular lately, and the TRX can dish up some ab busting exercises there too. Since the system is based on the user’s weight you are constantly balancing yourself and thus working on your core. Even when doing the suspended push up your core has to be engaged. This is the type integrated work that makes you stronger in a functional way, just what I look for.
While I have access to a gym, I still find myself going down to my basement and using the TRX. With it’s focus on functional strength, versatility, ease of use and portability the TRX is a convenient and effective tool for any athlete.
