Athletes swear by them, biohackers love them, and somewhere there’s probably a wellness influencer wearing one while sipping mushroom coffee and cold plunging. The FlexBeam from Recharge Health tries to make that technology portable, wearable, and easy to use—basically bringing spa-style light therapy into your living room.

With all the snake-oil wellness trends out there, is it legit recovery tech…or just the wellness equivalent of rubbing crystals on your hamstrings? Let’s break it down.

At its core, the FlexBeam uses red and near-infrared light wavelengths (around 610–650 nm and 800–850 nm) designed to penetrate tissue and stimulate cellular activity. The idea is that light energy boosts mitochondrial function—the tiny “power plants” inside cells—so your body produces more ATP (cellular energy) and accelerates recovery processes.

In practical terms, and from what Recharge Health claims, that translates to a few commonly reported benefits:

Red and near-infrared light may increase circulation by stimulating nitric oxide release, which relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow. Better circulation can reduce swelling and relieve pressure on irritated nerves.

So how did those ‘benefits’ translate in my testing? As long as you hold a realistic set of expectations and exercise consistent use, the Recharge Health Flexbeam did indeed deliver results. That said, it’s not a miracle device, but more of a wellness assistant.

The biggest benefit I came across was pain relief. With all the cycling I do, my neck, shoulders, and back all tend to talk back to me on the regular. Using the Flexbeam after long rides or up-tempo workouts did deliver some relief. Think of it as Tylenol that runs on red light. Lower back pain was not only noticeably reduced the next morning after a long ride, but over time, I noticed less pain in that area in general. Again, consistent use is the key here…one session isn’t gonna move the needle much.

As for things like reduced inflammation and faster recovery…those are both increasingly difficult benefits to quantify. Did I feel less inflammation in my neck and shoulder joints after using the device. Maybe? Did I find that I recovered faster from tough workouts after using the device? Perhaps? Again, the placebo effect can be powerful, but I *think* there was a bit of a difference here after continued use. Was it Earth-shaking? No. Was it enough to consider investing in the device? One of the clever things about the FlexBeam is its wraparound, wearable design. Instead of standing in front of a giant panel like you’re auditioning for a tanning commercial from 2003, you strap the device onto the body part that’s complaining the loudest (keep your mind out of the gutter, kids.)

The FlexBeam splits the difference. It’s portable but still delivers relatively high irradiance (about 110 mW/cm²), which is respectable for a wearable device, at least when compared to other ‘portables’.

That said, it has fewer LEDs than larger panels, which can create gaps in coverage when treating large areas. The best workaround to that would be to shift the device slightly as you use it if being highly targeted is your game.

The science is real, the tech is cool and shows a lot of promise, and while it won’t give you Wolverine-level healing powers, it might help your back feel less like it lost a fight with a folding chair, or in my case, a gravel bike.
