Danner Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals: From front porch to fire pit.
Since 1932, Danner has made boots for the working man and woman. Danner came west to provide the best built boots for loggers nearly a century ago. They have continued to provide quality made footwear for workers. Product lines in military, tactical, hunting and hiking styles have protected the feet of many of the nation’s finest. I was proud to wear Danners for 26 years as a law enforcement officer. When I saw that company had expanded their product line to include the Danner Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals, I had to give them a try.
Danner Quality, Rugged Construction
When the Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals first arrived, I could immediately feel that they were made with the same rugged construction as their work boots. The sturdy Vibram Megagrip sole is made of the same tough material as their work boots. Though the soles are tough, the uppers are amazingly comfortable. They are neatly attached to the soles. The dual bands at the top of the arch keeps the sandals neatly in place but provides nice flexibility when walking. The footbed surface has a slight grip to it so the sandals stay on your feet, even if they get a little wet. Despite the rugged feel of these sandals, they measure in at only 16 oz. per pair. They are marketed as a recovery sandal for campers and weekend backpackers so the light weight of these sandals is appreciated.
Shelter Cove: Made With Comfort in Mind
I started out wearing the Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals around my campsite with bare feet. I found the grip footbed to really help these sandals stay in place. The sandals would be a great fit for people with wider feet because I found them a little loose on my narrow feet. This was remedied by putting on a fresh pair of hiking socks. They were perfect. The molded footbed and arch support in the Shelter Cove were perfect for my tired feet. The Vibram sole protected the bottom of my feet and made my feet feel protected while letting them breath at the same time. In between the tough sole and the rugged upper, there is a soft cloud of a midsole that soothed my tired feet and legs.

Not Your Average Sandal
The Danner Shelter Cove has some unique features that I didn’t expect in a recovery sandal. I already mentioned that there is a Megagrip Vibram sole and a textured footbed, but I was really able to put these features to work while I filtered water from a Rocky Mountain stream. I was able to grip on the rocks, even with my feet in the water, without a slip. It was so refreshing to let my feet soak in the cool water while still being protected from the rocky streambed. The Shelter Cove then shed the water after leaving the stream so I was again wearing a dry sandal. I love it!!
Danner Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals: A Sure Winner After Race Day
I truly appreciated the full value of the Danner Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals in the days following the Leadville 100 Trail Run. After many hours running on the rugged Rocky Mountain Trails, my legs and feet had taken a beating. The only thing I wanted to wear following the race were my Shelter Coves. They were supportive to my legs and sore feet but also soft like a cushion. They allowed my battered feet to breath and get back to normal much faster than in previous races. Thank you to Danner for that quick recovery!!
I’d Expect Nothing Less from Danner Recovery Sandals
Over my years as a law enforcement officer and now as a full time adventurer, I have the experiences of wearing Danner’s quality boots and footwear. The Danner Shelter Cove Recovery Sandals added yet another category of superior footwear to my experience with the brand. The protective but soft comfort that promotes recovery after work and play is the perfect addition to my footwear. They have now become my go-to slip-ons after racing, when camping or when walking around my home. Shelter Cove, named for resupply station on the Pacific Crest Trail, was the inspiration for these recovery sandals. With a very reasonable MSRP of $85, you will be so pleased with your purchase.
