Decker X Lab is well known for their versatile, functional footwear. They have recently brought the Deckers X Lab X-SCAPE SNKOUT Gore-Tex lined shoe into their inventory. It is marketed as the 4X4 of hiking shoes. I was able to test out the X-SCAPE SNKOUT on some hiking and backpacking in the Colorado Rockies this fall. Aside from being a beautiful, fashionable shoe, I found the shoes to be super durable and comfortable.
The Fine Details of the X-SCAPE SNKOUT
I want to tell you the real deal about how these shoes felt and functioned for me. To start off, the opening to the shoe has a stretch opening that fits snugly around the ankle. As a result, I had no need for trail gaiters and I had zero trouble with debris falling into the ankle. I ordered normal size for my hiking/running shoes (size 10.5 women’s) and found them to be a little roomy. If you tend to be in between sizes, I would recommend the lower of size as these had plenty of room in front of my big tow. The laces pulled the mid area of the shoe neatly around my arch and reduced any excess movement. Walking in the SNKOUT was like walking on pillows. However, they were surprisingly responsive. The sole has the rocker shape which makes this a wonderful hiking shoe.
Speaking of the sole, the X-SCAPE SNKOUT has a Vibram sole with low profile, multi-directional lugs. As a result, they had traction when I needed it, but a smooth walking surface when I did not. I found these shoes to have excellent uphill traction and downhill traction. The squared off heel of the shoe provided for an excellent heel to toe flow as I hiked and provided for some extra cushion and stability on the downhills. The insole stayed neatly in place as I hiked and can be removed if you needed to dry out the shoes.

Deckers X Lab X-SCAPE SNKOUT GTX = Go Anywhere X Do Anything
Aside from excellent traction and comfort for mountain hiking and backpacking, I decided to put the Gore-Tex to the test with a slushy walk through our first snowfall in Aspen. These shoes did great! My feet stayed dry despite a two-mile hike through snowy trails and slushy sidewalks. No problem! My socks were perfectly dry and the insoles didn’t need drying. Despite the lower profile lugs, I found the shoes to have decent traction in the snow, even on a downhill.
