Lunta Lady GTX
Hanwag has been making quality outdoor shoes in Germany since 1921. Hanwag’s Lunta Lady GTX boot is no exception. Hanwag beautifully constructed this boot for women who want a fashion friendly resort style boot that’s also designed for some serious play. With all the boots on the market today, women are flooded with a variety of options. This stylish boot is a step above the rest because not only do you have fashion, you have a waterproof, Gore-Tex, highly insulated boot that you can hike in all day. The Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX is a versatile boot that can be used for walking around town on snowy days, light hiking through snowy trails, shoveling the driveway, or any light outdoor activity.
Hanwag
Who is Hanwag you ask? According to their website they have production lines at their headquarters in Vierkirchen, near Munich and have further exclusive production facilities in Croatia (where the Lunta Lady GTX is made), Hungary and Rumania. Their relatively simple transportation requirements helps Hanwag minimize their environmental impact (who doesn’t love that!). Hanwag prides themselves in true double-stitching. Just because a boot has what appears to be double-stitching doesn’t mean it is necessarily so. What characterizes the genuine double-stitch technique is two rows of stitching through the upper—the first connecting the upper to the rib of the insole (a special lip on the insole specifically for double-stitching), and the second connecting the upper to the midsole. This produces a product that is much stronger than glue, making their boots extremely stable, durable, and built to last.

First Impressions
I was fortunate to have a week long vacation in Steamboat, CO and besides ski boots my Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX is the only boot I wore. In typical Colorado fashion, the weather varied from warm blue bird days with temps in the 30’s to dumping snow with temps in the teens throughout the week. Whether I was taking a hike on snow-packed trails, walking around down town or the base of the mountain, my Lunta Lady GTX kept my feet warm and comfortable all day long.
Hanwag designed this piece of footwear to catch a women’s eye. When you first look at the boot the knitted cuff not only adds warmth, but some softness and style to the leather/fabric design. The full lace up construction let me easily tighten and loosen up the boot for the perfect fit for each of my activities. The suede leather over the fabric provides a nice contrast to the overall look of the boot. The Lunta Lady GTX is fairly light for a boot. Size 4.5 weighs 510 grams making this boot easy to trudge through deeper snow without feeling bulky.
Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX Features
The upper is made out of a high quality suede and G-1000 Heavy Duty hybrid fabric. This duo makes a durable, Gore-Tex waterproof, high performance powerhouse combo. The upper portion of the boot provides ample pliability for optimal movement. The suede is lined in all the right places so when your boot is not being worn, the upper continues to stand tall without flopping over. The suede on the toe box and heel is stiff for great stability and protection. As stated above, the full laced up design helps you to adjust your fit. The lower portion of the boot, the toe and heel is double-stitched for extreme durability.

The Upper
The sole of the Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX is quite impressive. This boot is made for icy conditions! There is a tread depth of 3.5-4.5mm and Hyper-Grip throughout the sole. Hanwag has designed 9 IceGrip zones throughout the sole of the boot. These strategically placed zones keeps you upright while walking on icy patches. I traversed through a variety of conditions with the confidence that I wouldn’t fall flat on my face. The IceGrip zones really helped me not slide around walking on ice.

The inside of the Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX is constructed of a warm waterproof Gore-Tex lining with a high wool content. The wool is soft, non-itchy and thick enough to keep you warm all day long, but thin enough to not be bulky. One day I wore my Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX boots all day. I started by hiking on a snowy trail in the morning, then went to a restaurant and walked around town all afternoon. I continued to wear my boots walking from the hotel to downtown through the cool night temps and the wool kept my feet at a consistently regulated temperature. I was easily able to go from inside to outside without my feet overheating or cooling off.
Sizing & Fit of the Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX
On Hanwag’s website they offer UK sizing with a sizing guide for US & Europe sizes. Some confusion set in on the sizing guide of the Lunta Lady GTX. I am typically somewhere between a US 8 & 8.5. The boot I was sent is a US size 7, UK 6, EUR 39.5; which does not follow the sizing guide off the website pictured below. If I ordered my boots online I would’ve chosen the UK size 6 since it followed the US 8.5, so ultimately I would’ve ended up with the right size I believe. I’m hoping it was just a misprinted tag. The size felt pretty true to a size 8.5. I was able to wear a medium thickness sock comfortably in the boot. If you have wider calves you can loosen the laces and there is ample space around the top. If you have smaller calves like me, the only con I found in the Hanwag Lunta Lady GTX was that there was a slight pinching at the top front of the knitted cuff. If you tie the laces tight up top you will lose the nice circular shape of the upper.
