If you’re someone who tows a trailer, then you know how important it is to have a reliable hitch pin. Unfortunately, many traditional hitch pins are made from steel that rusts easily and are secured with clumsy R-Clips that can be hard to put on and do not provide security from theft. Fortunately, the PinUltimate quick release hitch pin by Big Sky Precision, Inc. is here to solve this problem.
Founded in 1993 in Manhattan, Montana, Big Sky Precision’s mission is to create customized, American-made technologies of the highest quality, develop long-lasting relationships with customers and vendors, offer competitive pricing and continually improve processes, and provide customers with the fastest turnaround time in the industry. PinUltimate Hitch Pin Construction
The PinUltimate hitch pin is available in two options: titanium and stainless steel. I had the chance to test out the granddaddy of them all – the titanium model. Both materials are durable and strong, however, titanium is lighter and better for extreme temperature changes. It’s also more corrosion-resistant than stainless steel, making it a better option for areas with harsh weather conditions. The handle of the hitch pin is made from CNC-machined aircraft-grade aluminum. It is then anodized and coated with Cerakote for a long-lasting finish.

The hitch pin is standard size and will fit class III, IV, and V hitches.
How Does PinUltimate Hitch Pin Work?
The PinUltimate hitch pin is designed to make securing your hitch a breeze. With its unique quick release button, depressing the thumb button on the hitch pin handle releases the positive-locking balls, which protrude from the shaft to hold the end cap in place. The pin then slides freely, and releasing the thumb button locks the cap in place. I found that the hitch pin functioned smoothly, and the machined aluminum cap felt secure on the pin and slid smoothly on and off the shaft.
Installing the PinUltimate hitch pin was easy and pain-free. I could use one hand to fully push the pin through the hole in the receiver and then slide the “Snap-To-It Connector Cap” onto the pin using my other hand. Instead of fighting with a clip, the process was fast and smooth.
One of the best features of the PinUltimate hitch pin is that it’s fitted with a premium cylinder lock that protects receivers from thieves. The lock cylinder is bi-directional, meaning it works no matter which way you insert the key into it. Locking and unlocking the hitch pin was smooth and trouble-free.
PinUltimate Quick-Release Hitch Pin Performance
During my testing period, I left the PinUltimate hitch pin inserted in the hitch of my truck for 10 days, driving in various weather conditions. I experienced warm and cold days, rain and snow, and Michigan’s salted roads. Despite these extreme conditions, the PinUltimate survived and operated as it did when I first received it.
Although I left the pin in for almost two weeks, it’s recommended that users rinse away debris regularly and lubricate the key slot, handle button, and titanium locking balls with WD-40 or a similar lubricant. When I removed the PinUltimate from the hitch, I was surprised to see what appeared to be surface rust. However, I soon realized that the rust was actually residue from the hitch and not the PinUltimate. With a simple cloth, I was able to remove the rust, and the pin looked as good as new.
