1st Phorm Bar Review

In an industry where supplement brands often have shorter lifespans than a pre-workout caffeine buzz, 1st Phorm has managed to become the seasoned veteran of the fitness scene. Since 2009, the St. Louis-based company has built a serious reputation…protein powders, pre-workouts, a loyal community, and a no-nonsense approach to sports nutrition that has kept them relevant in an industry that chews brands up quickly.

So when a brand like that puts out two bars that are protein-focused, two questions come to mind pretty fast. Are they actually good? And at just over $3 a bar, are they worth it? We put four flavors from both product lines through a taste-and-texture gauntlet to see if they’re truly a podium finish or just an expensive way to hit your macros.

First, Let’s Talk About What You’re Actually Choosing Between

This is where a lot of bar reviews go sideways, so let’s be clear about what 1st Phorm is actually selling here, because these two products are solving different problems.

1st Phorm Protein Bar Review

The Power Pro Bar is their whole food play. Think RX Bar territory. It’s sweetened with dates and honey, uses grass-fed whey protein isolate and milk protein isolate as its protein base, and contains no artificial flavors or preservatives. Each bar delivers 15g of protein. The philosophy is clean label, simple ingredients, things your grandmother could theoretically recognize. Four flavors: Chocolate Brownie, Coconut Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, and Salted Peanut Butter.

The Level-1 Bar is a completely different animal. This is the indulgent protein bar, built like a layered dessert with a chocolate coating, crunchy bits, and a nougat-style center. It punches harder on protein at 20g per bar and has a flavor lineup that reads more like a dessert menu than a supplement catalog. Choco Chip Cookie Dough, S’mores, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Salted Caramel, Birthday Cake… you get the idea. Over 15 flavors in rotation.

So before you even pick one up, you’re making a choice: do you want something that eats like food, or something that tricks your brain into thinking you’re having dessert while quietly stacking protein? Both are valid. They’re just different tools.

1st Phorm Power Pro Bar: The Clean-Label Option

1st Phorm Power Pro Peanut Butter Bar Review

Salted Peanut Butter — 6.5/10

You know when you watch a movie trailer that looks incredible and then the actual movie is just…fine? That’s the Salted Peanut Butter Power Pro Bar. The ingredients list is impressive. Dates, honey, grass-fed whey, nut butter — things that belong in a bar worth its price tag. But the flavor doesn’t quite back up the promise. There’s peanut butter in there, you can taste it, and there are real peanut pieces for texture. It just doesn’t hit you with that deep, roasted, salty-sweet peanut punch you’re hoping for. It tastes politely peanutty rather than confidently peanutty.

1st Phorm Power Pro Salted Peanut Butter Bar Review

Fans of RX Bars will feel at home with the format. The texture is soft and slightly dense in the way that dates-based bars always are. If clean ingredients are your non-negotiable and you’re not expecting a flavor explosion, this gets the job done.

One practical heads-up: the natural nut butter oils in this bar are real. This thing is not dropping-friendly near a white shirt. You’ve been warned.

1st Phorm Power Pro Coconut Bar Review

Coconut Chocolate Chip — 7.5/10

This is the best of the Power Pro line we tested, and it’s not particularly close. The coconut flavor shows up immediately and stays throughout, with actual coconut chunks giving it a slightly chew-forward texture that almost reads like a cookie dough ball you’d make at home. It’s the bar where the whole-food approach actually works in its favor, because coconut is a flavor that plays nicely with dates and honey rather than fighting them.

1st Phorm Power Pro Coconut Chocolate Chip Bar Review

If coconut is your thing, this might actually be an 8/10 for you. It’s the Power Pro flavor to grab if you want to see what the line is capable of. If you don’t like coconut, obviously skip it, but if you’re on the fence about the whole Power Pro concept, start here.

1st Phorm Level-1 Bar: The Dessert-Disguised-As-a-Protein-Bar Option

1st Phorm Level 1 Peanut Butter Lover Bar Review

Peanut Butter Lover — 7.5/10

Given the name, you’d expect to open this and have peanut butter hit you in the face. It doesn’t quite do that. The peanut butter flavor is present and pleasant, but it’s wearing a suit rather than working construction. There’s a peanut-flavored candy coating on the outside, crunchy bits in the middle, and a peanut nougat center that ties it together, but it tastes more like “peanut butter-inspired” than “peanut butter obsessed.”

1st Phorm Level 1 Peanut Butter Lover Protein Bar Review

That said, there’s an interesting thing that happens with this bar the more you eat them. The first one feels like a 7. By the third or fourth time you reach for one, it has climbed to a 7.5 or maybe an 8. It’s a grower. The layers reveal themselves over time and the format starts to make more sense. Worth keeping around, just don’t judge it on the first impression alone.

1st Phorm Level 1 Cookie Dough Bar Review

Choco Chip Cookie Dough — 9/10

This is the one. If you’re going to try a single bar from this entire review, it’s this one.

The chocolate coating gives you that satisfying first crack. There’s a slight crispiness underneath that actually mimics the texture of a real cookie. The interior tastes like cookie dough in a way that most “cookie dough flavored” protein products fail at entirely. Most cookie dough protein bars taste like someone described cookie dough to a food scientist who had never actually eaten it. This one tastes like someone in the lab ate a lot of cookie dough and didn’t stop until they got it right.

1st Phorm Level 1 Cookie Dough Protein Bar Review

The best way to put it: it feels like something you shouldn’t be eating for your macros. That’s the highest compliment a protein bar can receive. At 20g of protein with no artificial flavors, it earns that feeling.

The Bigger Picture: Where Do The 1st Phorm Bars Fit in Your Kit?

If you’re active and on the move, whether that’s a long trail day, back-to-back meetings, or just trying to hit your protein numbers without cooking every meal, these bars are useful. The Level-1 Bars are the ones you reach for when you need protein and you want to feel like you earned a treat. The Power Pro Bars are the ones you reach for when you want fuel that came from something that used to grow in the ground.

Think of it like this: the Level-1 Bar is the high-performance trail shoe, built for output and experience. The Power Pro Bar is the minimalist hiking boot, simple construction, honest materials, no frills. You might own both for different days.

Pricing sits at just over $3 per bar for both lines, which lands squarely in premium territory. For context, RX Bars run a similar price, and comparable protein bars from brands like Barebells or Built Bar are in the same ballpark. You are paying for quality ingredients and a no-artificial-anything commitment. Whether that justifies the price is a personal call, but the product backs up the premium better than most.

The Verdict on the 1st Phorm Bars

Both bars are worth your time, but for different reasons.

If you want clean whole-food fuel and you don’t mind trading some flavor punch for ingredient integrity, grab the Power Pro Coconut Chocolate Chip. If coconut isn’t your thing, the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip is a solid backup.

If you want 20g of protein that actually tastes like something you’d choose to eat, start with the Choco Chip Cookie Dough Level-1 Bar. Just know that you’ll probably end up buying another box before the first one is finished.

1st Phorm didn’t reinvent the protein bar. But they came with a clear point of view on both ends of the spectrum, and the best of what they made can compete with anyone on the shelf. That’s enough to earn a spot in the rotation. For more info or to grab some for yourself, visit 1stphorm.com or amazon.com.
