We typically speak about activities versus “sports” here at ActiveGearReview.com, but when I was approached by HEAD to test out one of their new tennis racquets, I decided I’d give it a try. I am sure half of you are rolling your eyes and saying, why wouldn’t you test a sweet racquet by HEAD?! To give you a little background, I haven’t always played a lot of tennis and I happily put myself in the beginner category. I have 2 old tennis racquets that are probably 25 years old at this point and I use them 5-10 times a year. What really interested me about testing the HEAD YouTek Graphine Instinct S was to see the difference between my current racquets I had been using for the past 25 years and today’s racquet’s.
Tennis, a great way to get exercise
If you follow the ActiveGearReview reviews and articles at all, you will notice that most activities and sports don’t include ball activities such as tennis balls, footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, etc. They generally follow activities including, running, road and mountain biking, hiking, skiing, etc. Activities that are considered a little more “outdoorsy”. But since we can’t always get out to the trail head, I’m all about any activity that gets us active and burning calories. After playing a number of rounds of tennis this spring season, I’ve reminded myself how much I like the activity/sport and how it can be a good workout. I’ve also reminded myself of how much I need to practice!
Tennis in the future
One of the nice things about playing tennis is that you often don’t have to travel that far to find a tennis court. If you live in a more established and or older city, tennis courts are easier to come by. As land becomes more precious and expensive, I feel there are fewer tennis courts in new communities as they tend to take up a good amount of land. After thinking about this, I have come up with my own reasoning for fewer tennis courts in newer communities. A tennis court takes up the room of a basketball court, but there is only a max of 4 people that can play at a time, and typically it’s 2 people playing. It will be interesting to see how the sports grows or shrinks in the future with this in mind.
HEAD YouTek Graphene Instinct Tennis Racquet
The HEAD YouTek Graphene Instict tennis racquet is a high-end tennis racquet that is suited for all levels of play, from beginner to expert. This racquet is extremely lightweight, weighing in at 9.5 oz. Having played with my old school tennis racquets, I was very happy to be playing with a racquet that was a whole lot lighter and easier to swing.
From a ball control standpoint, the difference between playing with the older racquets and the HEAD YouTek Graphene Instinct S tennis racquet was night and day. It amazed me how much easier it was to place the ball where I wanted it to go and how much control I had. The head of the Instinct S is over-sized, so it has a big sweet spot which comes in handy for beginners like myself.
The HEAD YouTek Graphene Instinct tennis racquet is made from a material called Graphene. This material is extremely lightweight, but has a breaking strength 200 times greater than steal. Pretty impressive if you ask me! By using Graphene, the designers were able to shift more weight away from the middle of the racquet and place more weight in the areas you want it, the handle and the head. By placing more weight in the handle, the racquet becomes more maneuverable. By placing more weight in the head, you are able to get a more powerful shot out of the racquet.
Final Thoughts
After playing tennis with the HEAD YouTek Graphine Instinct S racquet, I’ve come up with two final thoughts. First, tennis is a great alternate exercise in which 95% of people out there can play. Second, technology has come a LONG way and HEAD is at the forefront of technology in tennis racquets. Being able to compare my old school tennis racquets versus the YouTek Graphene Instinct S provided me with some amazing insight into what I have been missing out on all these years.
