Asics Gel 1160 Review
We’ve come to expect a certain standard of excellence from Asics. As a pillar of the running community, Asics has led the industry in comfort, function, and durability. Admittedly, most of the attention goes to the higher end shoes – and we testers at AGR, being equal opportunity reviewers, wish to let some of the entry level models share the limelight. Thus, the Gel-1160. While skipped over by some runners for it’s “affordable” price tag, the Gel-1160 deserves some attention for doing what it does without all the bells, whistles, and hoop-la. It’s a basic, dependable training shoe that keeps you moving on down the road.
The 1160 was definitely created with the mild pronator in mind, as it doesn’t have a ton of correction in terms of inward roll. It does, however, have lots of cushioning without all the added weight, probably due to Asics’ “Speva” midsole and new “Trusstic” system, which was designed to do exactly that. Clydesdales may want to look elsewhere, though – heavier runners may feel under supported. Predictably, it runs like a training shoe, with plenty of smooth transition from heel to toe, and a slightly cushy feel under the balls of your feet. While not exactly the quickest feeling shoe on the market, it did feel supportive throughout the entire run, whether it was short trots on the treadmill, or long distance pavement pounding epics. The bonus here is that for the price tag, you can buy two pairs for the price of those “high end” shoes, and not feel guilty about using them as gym cross trainers. Check them out at www.asics.com.
