You may be wondering why in the heck a girl is reviewing men’s running shorts. Fair enough. Don’t worry, I have not forsaken by beloved running skirts in exchange for men’s shorts, but I have participated in the successful conclusion of my husband’s quest to find the ultimate running shorts—and I had to share so as to save other chafed souls the agony of a lengthy, expensive and painful search.
Simply put, the Salomon Exo Wings TW short is an ideal, chafe-free pairing of shorts and tights, with some compression thrown in to energize your quads as you pound out the miles.
Sure there are other combo short/tight packages on the market, but on the Exo Wings, the shorts don’t go between your thighs—it’s just one layer of smooth moving Lycra for no chafing and no bunching. These attributes alone were enough to make these light-weight, summer, shorts a champion in our household, but there’s more.
The inner short features Salomon honeycomb compression, made of Exo Sensifit fabric, in the thighs, to provide muscle stimulation where you need it and airy mesh where you don’t, for truly breathable support.
The shorts fit slim, sport a 10.2 inch inseam and UV 50 sun protection. An expandable lumbar pocket is great for gels, while an inner key pocket keeps valuables secure and reflective detailing lets others know where you are.
A unique, wide, mesh waistband is comfortable worn high or low—depending upon where the compression part of the shorts grabs your thigh muscles. The mesh also helps runners keep their cool on steamy days. A drawstring makes sure the Exo Wings stay put.
Nirvana doesn’t come cheap, they retail for $79.95, but I’ve noticed some great sales online—we’ve purchased multiple pairs! For more info on the Exo Wings TW Short and other Salomon products, visit www.salomonrunning.com.
I have an old model pair of salomon shorts for women with a similar style (wings, single layer lycra shorts), but the compression short portion is not quite long enough (6-8″ would be great). I love the shorts I have with a zippered lumbar pocket big enough to hold my cell phone and a gel or keys, but I could use a new pair. What happened to these shorts, or a variation of the new exo wings for women? Surely Salomon knows that more than half the runners out there now are women!
Greetings from Salomon’s PR team.
Liz — keep an eye out for the XR Short for women, new for Spring/Summer 2011. It features a Sensifit brief with a longer inseam, at 10 inches, as well as a gel pocket. Sounds like it might be what you are looking for.
