If running is your thing and you don’t want the colder wet weather distracting you from your running workouts, the North Face Better Than Naked Jacket is an excellent option to keep you off the treadmill and outside running. I’ve been testing this jacket in the mountains of Colorado to see how it holds up against some of the harsher climates and elements. 3 words, this jacket rocks!
The Better Than Naked Jacket by TNF is a lightweight jacket with both trail and road runners in mind. The Better than Naked line by The North Face started with the idea of having a piece of fabric next to the skin that is super comfortable, and might even be better than being naked! To the touch, the fabric is super soft, but it does not stick to your skin and get clammy like other running jackets on the market. This jacket is water resistant with a DWR coating that keeps water from getting through the fabric. Over time this will wear out, but all you have to do is use a DWR wash from Granger or other similar products on the market. I ran in a light cold rain and the jacket stayed completely dry. In a down poor, the jacket will let in rain through the mesh panels.
For breathability, the Better Than Naked Jacket has a mesh material under the armpits to allow for you to vent your heat and sweat. This material also extends to two small back panels on the back of the jacket near the shoulders. For night running, The North Face added reflective tape to the jacket on all angles. As days get shorter and many of us having to run in the dark, being able to be seen can be life saving. There is one pocket in the jacket and it is located on the left chest. For the iPod or MP3 lovers out there, there is a small hole on the inside of the jacket to feed your headphones through. I personally like to hear what’s going on around me, so I don’t run with headphones. On that note, a nice feature on this jacket includes holes near the ears of the hood for hearing. When running with a hood, it often times blocks out noise as well. To provide a fitted waist, there is a small draw cord around the waist.
Overall, I am super happy with both the performance and styling of the North Face Better Than Naked Jacket and would highly recommend it to any runner that wants to fight off the elements as fall and winter sets in. It also doubles as a nice wind breaker for hiking or around town too!
