Supreme traction! This trail training/racing shoe from Salomon is made for your winter runs that probably should just wait until springtime. The Winter Contagrip outsole features spike-like lugs formed of a special compound meant to maximize traction on wet and slippery winter terrain, and they deliver in that department. At just 11 ounces, these shoes are a featherweight relative to many trail competitors, but they don’t skimp on technology. Their upper is made of an anti-debris mesh meant to keep the dust and dirt out with a Sensifit system which cradles your foot and minimizes slippage inside the shoe. The closure system features Solomon’s Quicklace “pull and go” system which we found to allow super fast adjustments on the trail. The midsole of this shoe isn’t light on cushion either- in fact our testers commented that the heel height could possibly be a bit lower as they felt a bit unsteady landing heel-first on super rugged terrain. The Speedcross2 does run quite narrow, and we think it would feel more stable underfoot with a wider base, so be sure to try them on before purchasing. We tested the Speedcross2 in training on brutal trails and even raced in them, and are hard-pressed to find a shoe so at home on super tough trails- they just don’t slip.
