This new trail shoe from Nike is based on their best-selling stability road running shoe, the Zoom Structure Triax. The Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 12 ESC is a beefed-up hybrid trail running shoe with a water-resistant upper, internal stone shield, and eco-friendly construction. It also features a gusseted tongue (the sides of the tongue are attached to the sides of the shoe) which does a good job of preventing rocks and fine trail dirt from entering the shoe. Our testers were happy to report that this isn’t just a road shoe with a water-resistant upper, Nike has designed a trail-specific outsole with beefier lugs and stickier rubber compounds for traction on the trail. Cushioning is very good and a stone shield in the midsole does a good job of deflecting impacts from sharp rocks and roots. The upper, we felt, might be a bit on the low-volume side, and the laces were not quite long enough. As indicated by the ‘+’ in the name, this model is compatible with the Nike+ system.
Overall, we feel that the Nike Zoom Structure Triax+ 12 ESC is a good stability trail shoe with the versatility to put in some road miles as well. For more information on the Zoom Structure Triax+ 12 ESC and other Nike footwear, please visit www.nike.com or www.amazon.com/nike.
