Saucony Peregrine 2 Review
The Saucony Peregrine 2 is an excellent option for those looking to take the first step into the world of minimalist trail running. The Saucony Peregrine 2 is a trail running shoe with a little less cushion and support compared to standard trail running shoes. While the Peregrine 2 doesn’t fit in the barefoot running category, I find that it fits somewhere between minimalist and lightweight training.
Fit
The Saucony Peregrine 2 does a nice job of wrapping around your foot providing a good snug and secure fit when laced up. If a trail running shoe has too much room in the upper, it will often fit sloppy and not provide a very secure ride, but there was no sign of that in this shoe. The upper is constructed of mesh with synthetic and fabric overlays to provide form and structure around the foot. Around the toebox, there is a synthetic layer that helps with abrasion resistance and also helps keep water out if you run through a shallow puddle. There is a small amount of padding around the cuff of the shoe which helps secure the shoe to your foot and also provides a comfortable fit. For those that wear Gators to keep our snow, water, or sand, there is a clip on the front of the laces that you can clip onto. I personally don’t wear shoe gators, but I know plenty of trail runners who do.
Midsole & Outsole
The midsole of the Peregrine 2 is made from Progrid Lite which is Saucony’s version of EVA, but is 20% more responsive and last longer. I found this cushioning to be plenty on both long and short runs while running on various trail conditions. I tested the on trail runs between 3 and 15 miles.
The Outsole of the Peregrine 2 has great traction. The lugs provide plenty of traction in mud and on rock and are very durable. As you often see on a lot of trail running outsoles, the lugs on the forefoot are setup to give traction going uphill and on the heel the lugs are set in a reverse pattern to provide control on the descents. On all my runs, I always felt that the Saucony Peregrine 2’s provided very good traction.
Uses
Weighing in at 9.9 oz. for a men’s size 9 and 8.7 oz. for a women’s 7, the Saucony Peregrine 2’s are great for faster runs such as speed workouts or trail races, but also do just fine for both short and long training runs.
Overall, I was very happy with the performance of the Saucony Peregrine 2 and I give the shoe my stamp of approval.
