Mizuno Wave Enigma Running Shoe Review

Zachary Rodasti

Zach's been testing gear with Active Gear Review since day one of the site, and just generally loves being outside doing any outdoor activity. He and his wife race year round, prefer long distance endurance events, and have raced marathons in multiple states nationwide. Recently, Zach added triathlons to his list of endeavors, and has competed in all distances up to a half iron. He has two young boys who are full of energy and get into all sorts of trouble on a regular basis - just like him.

AGR tester Adam B. here, and I have also been putting the Wave Enigma through the paces for AGR, and I am in agreement with Zach. I too have been running in more ‘minimal’ shoes all season, so the Enigma was quite a departure. There’s a lot of shoe here. I heard these described recently as a ‘Wave Rider PLUS’ which I think is somewhat accurate but also cuts the Enigma short- the upper on this shoe is excellent! Very stretchy and breathable mesh and super supple microsuede make the Enigma very comfortable and it fits extremely well. The midsole is very tall, so this isn’t for those looking for low-to-the-ground racing flat type shoes, but I found the cushioning to be outstanding on long runs of 15 miles or more. I would highly recommend the Mizuno Wave Enigma for heavier neutral runners looking for a more substantial cushion shoe for longer runs. See you on the trail!

I have been running in the enigmas-my first pair of mizunos ever- for approximately 4 months now. I find the heel to be very well cushioned but the forefoot, on the other hand is lacking. I guess if I was a heel striker that would be forgivable but I am not. The lack of forefoot cushioning causes such discomfort I hav stopped wearing them on distance runs over 10k. Very disappointed because I really wanted these shoes to work on longer distances.
