Salomon Ultra Glide 4 Review

I live and train in west Michigan, where winter does not mess around. We deal with lake-effect snow, long gray stretches, and weeks where the trails disappear under deep drifts. Some mornings I wake up to fresh powder stacked across the yard, and I know right away that I won’t touch singletrack that day. Instead, I head for the roads. Around here, the roads usually get plowed and packed down pretty well. The snow turns firm and grippy, almost like a frozen dirt surface. The trails, on the other hand, can stay soft, uneven, and knee-deep.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve put over 50 miles on the Salomon Ultra Glide 4 in the Black colorway. I’ve run mostly on packed snowy roads, some slushy shoulders, icy patches, and a few trail sections when conditions allowed. This shoe has surprised me. It handles winter better than I expected, and it keeps me comfortable on long, cold miles.

First Impressions and Fit

When I first slipped the shoe on, I noticed the step-in comfort right away. The collar feels plush without feeling bulky. The heel counter holds my foot in place without digging into my Achilles. The tongue wraps over the top of my foot comfortably, and I don’t feel lace pressure at all.

I wear my usual men’s size 12.5, and the fit feels true to size. The SensiFit sleeve hugs my midfoot and keeps everything secure. The toe box gives me enough room to wiggle my toes, which matters a lot in winter. My feet swell a little on longer runs, even in cold weather. I also like having room to splay my toes when I climb icy hills or push off through slush.

Salomon Ultra Glide 4 Fit

The engineered mesh upper breathes well enough for winter running. I don’t get that swampy feeling inside the shoe, even when I hit wet snow. The upper doesn’t feel overly airy, but I don’t want super thin mesh in the middle of winter anyway. I want balance, and this shoe delivers that.

Running Through a Michigan Winter with the Salomon Ultra Glide 4

This winter, I’ve spent more time on the roads than the trails. The roads around my area get plowed and then packed down by traffic. That packed snow creates a surprisingly runnable surface. It feels firm, slightly textured, and consistent. Deep trail snow feels unpredictable. My feet sink, slide, and twist around hidden roots and rocks.

On packed snow, the Ultra Glide 4 feels stable and confident. The 6 mm drop feels natural. I don’t fight the shoe. I just run.

The Contagrip outsole grips well on packed snow and light ice. I wouldn’t take it out on pure glare ice without something for better traction, but for typical winter road conditions, it works great. The 4 mm lugs bite into the surface without feeling aggressive. When I transition onto short stretches of pavement, the shoe still feels smooth and controlled.

I’ve also run through slushy sections where the plows left messy piles along the shoulder. The shoe holds steady there, too. I don’t feel like my foot slides around inside the upper, and I don’t feel unstable on uneven snow chunks.

Salomon Ultra Glide 4 Cushioning and Ride

The Ultra Glide 4 uses a high stack, 41 mm in the heel and 35 mm in the forefoot. That sounds tall, but I don’t feel wobbly. Salomon shaped the platform well, and the shoe flares slightly for added stability.

The OptiFoam midsole feels soft but not mushy. On cold mornings in the teens and low twenties, the foam doesn’t turn into a brick. That matters a lot here in Michigan. Some shoes feel harsh and stiff in freezing temperatures. This one stays consistent.

I notice the cushioning most on longer efforts. When I head out for 12 to 16 miles on packed snowy roads, my legs feel fresher than I expect. The foam takes the edge off repetitive impact. The Relief Sphere design helps smooth out the ride. I don’t consciously think about the dimples underfoot. I just notice that my feet don’t feel beat up.

This shoe does not scream “speed.” When I pick up the pace, it responds fine, but it doesn’t feel snappy like a lightweight race shoe. I use it for steady long miles, and winter base training. In that role, it shines.

Stability on Mixed Surfaces

Winter running here often means constant surface changes. I might start on dry pavement, hit packed snow, move through slush, then cut onto a short trail section with uneven footprints frozen in place.

Salomon Ultra Glide 4 Stability

Despite the high stack, the Ultra Glide 4 feels surprisingly stable. I don’t feel like my ankle will roll when I step on uneven snow. The midsole feels grounded, and the upper keeps my foot centered over the platform.

Compared to some max-cushion trail shoes I’ve tried in the past, this one maintains better control. I can relax and enjoy the run instead of constantly watching my footing.

Durability So Far

After about 50 miles, the outsole shows minor wear in the forefoot, but nothing concerning. The upper still looks solid. I haven’t experienced any fraying or separation.

Salomon Ultra Glide 4 Durability

I expect this shoe to handle high mileage through the rest of winter and into spring when the trails thaw and turn muddy. I plan to keep it in rotation for long trail runs once the snow melts.

Final Thoughts on the Salomon Ultra Glide 4

For it’s price, I think the Ultra Glide 4 offers strong value. It feels lighter than many max-cushion trail shoes, yet it protects my legs on long runs. It grips well on packed snow and mixed winter surfaces. It fits comfortably and locks down securely.

I own the Black version, and I like the clean, simple look. I can wear them running and also to work as they pair with just about anything. Salomon also offers other color options if you prefer something brighter.

If you train through long winters like we do in Michigan, and you split time between packed roads and snow-covered trails, this shoe deserves a serious look. It handles winter miles with confidence, keeps my legs feeling good, and makes me want to head back out even when the forecast calls for another lake-effect band rolling in.

Winter around here can feel endless. But when I lace up the Ultra Glide 4, step onto a quiet, snow-packed road, and watch my breath rise in the cold air, I remember why I love running through every season. If you would like to learn more or make a purchase visit salomon.com or rei.com.
