Coldpruf Classic Base Layer Top and bottom Introduction
Coldpruf, the name says it all! The Classic Base Layer top and bottom are warm, lightweight, and breathable with 100% Merino Wool that can handle very cold conditions. These base layers meet all the must-have criteria for enjoying an active day skiing on the mountains, hiking beautiful wooded trails, keeping warm while commuting to work, or simply enjoying a movie on the couch. A very versatile use for such a simple item, really.
The Back Story
Let’s talk about Coldpruf the company first and foremost. They have been making apparel since 1914, so the experience factor is a definite plus. Base Layers is their business! That’s what they make, and all they make. I can appreciate that, plus they also have a fantastic green initiative; “Our products are green, our methods are green, and our approach to every new endeavor is focused on preserving the health of our planet”. ColdPruf is energy conscious in their manufacturing, recycles every little thing possible, and uses eco-friendly recycled materials in all their products including these Classic base layers.
Coldpruf is in a partnership with 1% for the Planet where they will donate a portion of every purchase to select non-profit groups. One of those groups that Coldpruf supports is the U.S. National Park Service which is alright in my book.
Technically, this is long underwear, but man, what a long way those tighty whities have come…
If you’ve been living in cave the past few years, you may not have heard of this wonder fabric, Merino Wool. But believe me when I say that is has become THE new material in everything from jacket insulation to socks , and of course base layer clothing. Merino provides great thermal qualities, is odor resistant, and even provides some UV protection. The one I like best of all is the fire resistant qualities. I’m not sure I’ll put that to the test, so I’ll have to take their word on that one.
Constructed of super lightweight 100% Merino wool, the Classic top regulates body temperature and moisture making it a perfect performance base layer for Nordic and alpine skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking or working outside in cold weather. Stitched with a flat seam, a drop tail, self-fabric cuffs and a tag-less design ensure all-day comfort. The sleeves are also longer and naturally stretch to the base of the hand. A simple feature that you will appreciate!
Coldpruf Classic Base Layer Performance
My main use for these base layers will be for tackling the mountains looking for powder. We’re all doing a little snow dance here in Colorado. Having said that, I’ve truly enjoyed testing the ColdPruf Classic Base Layer top and bottom in a variety of settings. First of all, for being as thin as it is, they are very comfortable and I’ve worn the top in a casual social settings. It’s very slim fitting, comfortable, and in my opinion looks great with a clean and classic appearance. My morning commute is comprised of taking my two little ones to school by either running or biking. I can tuck them away in the bike trailer so they are sheltered from the elements. Me, on the other hand, I have the cold, wind, and rain to deal with. I wore both the top and bottom numerous times as a base layer, and stayed warm and dry throughout. I would wear a mid-layer, or jacket which would help with the wind and rain. I would work up a sweat, but the base layers breathability worked fantastic. I never got that clammy cold feeling which I greatly appreciate!

Final Thoughts on the Coldpruf Classic Base Layer Top and Bottom
After a few washes the ColdPruf base layers have become softer and more comfortable. Do make sure to turn the garments inside out (per instructions) to insure a longer life. Temperatures and conditions have been turning colder and nastier, but with my ColdPruf Base layers I am actually looking forward to playing in the snow in my backyard Rocky Mountains.
