The Smith Variant Brim Ski Helmet is the best helmet that we have tested thus far. This helmet seems to match every need of ours and then some. We took this helmet out in all conditions, from warm and sunny to frigid, wind blown, and snowy. One of the features we enjoyed on the helmet was its removable inner head cap. This allowed us to wash out the sweat and stink after a few days of hard skiing and riding. To assist in keeping your heads’ temperature regulated, the inside is lined with the silver fiber X-Static performance fabric, which helps keep your noggin from getting too hot or too cold. In some other helmets our testers have worn, they would sometimes have to add an extra thin hat to cover their head to keep warm. Testers wore the Variant helmet in wind chill temps of -25 and their head stayed plenty warm. The helmet also comes with adjustable vents (22 to be precise) that allow you to keep your head from overheating on those warm spring ski and snowboard days. The Smith Variant Brim Helmet works best with Smith Goggles, as they put the two together and help prevent goggle fogging and gaper gaps. The brim of the helmet helped our tester avoid a complete face plant and also provides a tiny bit of shade. One minor complaint about this helmet is that the ear flaps seemed to be a bit tight. We thought the Smith Variant Brim Ski Helmet was a top performer and it gets our two thumbs up!
