Skiing in the Mammut Alagna Pant at Breckenridge
For the Hardcore skier out there that thinks they have everything, Mammut has come out with a new softshell ski/snowboard pant that might just make you want to do an upgrade. The Mammut Alagna Pant is a lined with a Gore-Tex membrane that is waterproof and breathable, so whether you are waste deep in west coast pow or skiing the icey east coast slopes, you should stay warm and dry.
I’ve been hard at work testing the Mammut Alagna Pants at Breckenridge and Keystone this season. In the beginning of the season, I tested these pants out in warmer temps and less snow and as the season has progressed, the snow has started to dump and the temperatures are a little cooler. While testing the Alagna pants, I noticed the pants have a little less insulation than the typical soft shell material, it’s more like a soft felt lining with a little insulation. In my mind, the pants are closer to a shell than a softshell in that they don’t stretch as much as the typical softshell and as mentioned above, they don’t offer all that much insulation. This is not to say that they don’t do the job though. I wore a pair of baselayer tights in temps down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit and I stayed plenty warm. And although the material doesn’t stretch all that much, the pants have a relaxed fit to accommodate every movement you make and they also have a semi articulated knee to keep the Alagna from sitting odd while on the bumps or general knee bends.
The Mammut Alagna Pants have 3 water resistant zippered pockets on the front of the pant that is good for stashing a phone, ski pass, wallet, etc. If you’re tearing up the slopes and starting to overheat, there are two water resistant zippers that go from your hip to your knee on each side. To keep the snow and cold from coming up through the bottom of the pants, there is a gripped gator on each pant leg that easily fit over a pair of ski or snowboard boots. One of the features that I really liked on the pants is that Mammut put a tear resistant cuff on the pant legs that keeps them from tearing fast if your cuffs are going too far over your boots. This material is also used on the inside of the pant cuff, which is another common wear point.
If you want get all Mammuted out, you can get the Alagna Jacket that has a snow skirt that zips into the pants. This jacket is show in the photo above. The price for the pants comes in at a not so cheap price of $399 and if you want to add the jacket, you are looking at $549 retail. We feel that $399 is a little spendy for a pair of ski pants, but if price is not as much of a factor for you, the Mammut Alagna Pant is a bomber ski pant.
