For me, the best pieces of active apparel are often the ones that are the most versatile and the Swiss company Mammut fully embraces this belief. The Eigerjoch Hybrid Insulated Jacket is capable of fulfilling multiple roles throughout the year and through multiple seasons. By combining high breathability and a light weight with weather resistance, this is an item that can be your mid-layer or outer layer, depending on the condition and activity. Read on for my Mammut Eigerjoch Hybrid Insulated Jacket review.
Jacket or Mid-Layer? Why not Both?
The Eigerjoch Hybrid Jacket features Pertex® Quantum Air material to offer a highly breathable outer layer that is water-resistant and elastic. I really loved the feeling of this fabric and how it seems to adapt to the situation. I wore the Eigerjoch Hybrid during a light snow and the snow beaded up nicely and brushed off. Now, I’m not going to trust this to take on a heavy snow fall or rain, but know that it has you covered for light weather when you’re not looking to wear a heavy shell. Pontetorto® stretch fleece sections in the under arm and side areas add great flexibility in the areas you need it most. This fabric is also more breathable and allows air to escape without compromising core warmth.
Polartec® Alpha® insulation adds warmth to the Eigerjoch Hybrid and was designed to continue the trend of breathability and heat retention that the outer fabric starts. There is enough insulation to be your outer layer on a ski tour or winter hike, where the cold wind isn’t blowing too strong. When it drops below freezing, you’re definitely going to want to throw on a shell though. That leads perfectly in to the versatility of the Mammut Eigerjoch Hybrid Insulated Jacket and its ability to be an excellent mid layer. On a recent ski tour, when we broke above tree line and were more exposed to high winds, I pulled out my lightweight shell and put it on and the Eigerjoch Hybrid quickly became an excellent insulation layer. In addition to ski touring, I’ve also been wearing the jacket as my mid layer on resort skiing days combined with a hard-shell and it’s worked great. The Eigerjoch Hybrid also lends itself perfectly to activities like rock climbing and biking when done in shoulder seasons.
Mammut Eigerjoch Hybrid Insulated Jacket: Flexible and Functional
As someone with a long torso and relatively broad shoulders, I am often dealing with jackets and layers that get in the way when I make certain movements. Reaching up overhead usually leads to pulling at the waistline and a cold, exposed midsection. Mammut‘s experience in the rock climbing world has lead to the creation of their Vertical Motion Construction™ and High Reach Technology™, two elements that allow excellent range of motion while wearing the Eigerjoch Hybrid Jacket. For example, reaching overhead to put the skis up on the rack did not change the position of the jacket around my waist, something that seems like a small deal but is actually quite impressive. The combination of stretch panels and smart stitching of the fabric in the right places contributes to a superb freedom of movement in this jacket, regardless of activity.
From a feature perspective, the Eigerjoch Hybrid jacket strikes a good blend of minimalism with functionality, staying true to form to the ‘Hybrid’ in the name. A chest zipper pocket is a good place for small items and easy access. Two good size front pockets are smartly designed to be climbing harness compatible and are zippered for secure storage. For keeping out drafts, there is a hem drawstring that is easy to adjust with one hand and it also hides away with a cord that can be stored on the inside. Finally, the sleeves have thumb holes that didn’t fit me perfectly but are good for those that like this feature. Since I rarely have a use for thumb holes on this type of jacket, I was happy they were designed flat and aren’t very noticeable if you aren’t using them.
Mammut Eigerjoch Hybrid Jacket Review Conclusion: A Versatile Addition to an Active Wardrobe
In summary, I truly love the Mammut Eigerjoch Hybrid Jacket and give it a strong recommendation. Like all Mammut gear I’ve tested, the quality is very high and the design is extremely functional. This jacket is warm and weather resistant enough to serve as a light outer layer in most situations and breathable and flexible enough to be a nice mid layer under a shell. It feels and looks great and has exceptional mobility for a variety of activities. The Mammut Eigerjoch Hybrid Jacket doesn’t come cheap, but when you consider that you are essentially getting two pieces of apparel in one, the value proposition starts making more sense. I highly recommend checking it out either online or at your local Mammut dealer.
